While I don't want to make massive generalizations about people, it seems like some social groups are more accepting of "difference" than others.

What groups have you all found to work well?

I find that in general I get along better with people who are into art or science. Art includes theater, writing, etc. too. Also people who are into kind of unusual stuff, like science fiction/fantasy writing or medieval things, seem to be more approachable. I went to a science fiction convention and fit right in, and I hardly ever even read sci-fi any more.

This is also relevant to jobs. I'm looking for work right now and want to make sure I don't end up feeling like everyone I work with is a plastic mannequin in disguise. (And no, I'm not a programmer, so that isn't an option. I'm over on the graphic design/copywriting/marketing side of the cubicle :).)

So what social and work environments seem to be good ones?

I like to talk to people who are actively doing things I enjoy, or obviously have something in common with me. Like Rose, I stop and talk to parents who have babies her age. I also know I enjoy anime, writting, reading and stuff, so I know that at stores that sell things I'm intersted in it's more likely I'll find someone who's like me. ^^;

I hang out with what might be called Bikers. Most are proud of their differences from the mainstream, and accepting of others differences.

I used to hang out in the art & music crowd, which is probably why most of my friends are gay.

I've worked in two places where there were a lot of bikers. I got along very well with them.

Most of my friends are bi, a few are straight, and a few are gay.

Glad to see I'm not the only one. The other added benefit I've found is, when you're in a social setting with bikers, eventually you get back on the bikes and while you're still socializing, you don't have to talk to anyone :)
