The planet is not barren, is full of blossoming, resilient and colorful life. Life, life, but life is not made of cell phones, stealth planes and nukes, nor of child sex trafficking. These things are human products invented during the leap from 6m to 6b in the last 6000 years. There are still mothers passionately loving their children. It's an old heritage of mammal animal life. Even whales and dolphins do these splendid things that they have kept in common with us after they chose to inhabit the sea some 50m of years ago.
This beauty is still here until it will be wiped away by human"progress". But it wont' last much this "progress". With a bang and some whimper human "progress" will stop. While I am saying hallo tolife (to my life - I am old) I look with assurance to some renewed flourishing, which will not come from G8, UN, Obama or Putin, the Pope or Bin Laden or the Dalai Lama, but from some mysterious (mysterious to us) effort which has always persisted in the 4b years of the planet, and expressed itself in such different marvelous ways.

Oh, gosh, let Rupert Murdoch do his business for some more time, not
much anyway.

You say progress but I think you mean consumption.
Consumption is certainly limited by supply and demand.
It is impossible to feed the people who would pave over the last garden.
It is sooner impossible to even pay them enough money to buy food.

No, I mean progress. No consumptiona and later consumerism without "progress". "Progress" starts with the agrarian revolution, which after all is a technical fact. Even the organization of man for work or war is a technical business.
