Oh really? As disagreeable as their views may be, they have never mentioned anything about killing off autistics, so yeah I've not noticed any genocidal vibes from autism speaks. That's a bit of an overstatement

I've stated my case, and now I'm leaving this thread.

They are developing pre-natal testing which will stop us from ever being born. I'd say that's pretty close to genocide, considering it'll prevent anymore autistics from ever entering the world.

The end results of their work will leave the WP completely empty...

Autism Speaks are a bunch of Nazis. The very fact that this community is now their territory leaves me in a cold sweat. I could get banned just for speaking my mind.

I'm not going to stop speaking my mind. If it gets me banned, fine. I don't mean any harm.

In the past I grew fond of and addicted to forums and I had such a hard time thinking I would have to leave or maybe I'd get banned I'd rather conform. It didn't end well and I got banned anyway!

Teaches me! It's never worth shutting up. Staying a member is never worth my soul.

Prenatal testing can also be used for good, so you know what to expect when you're baby's born so if it is going to be autie you know how to bring them up and start early intervetion programs.
It's not all bad news.

If they start misrepresenting the autistic community, we can strike back, correct, or expose whatever they do. If they aren't popular in the autistic community, then they run the risk of losing the non-autistic audience as well.

I don't think they're too bad. They're mainly trying to speak for 'real' autism (as the public see it) not aspergers, and having seen people with more severe difficulties, and the stress that both they and their families are under, I would be completely for giving them help and researching to understand it and treat the symptoms/cause.

I don't think Autism Speaks is the huge genocidal conspiracy to wipe out people with aspergers that seems to keep cropping up here. Perhaps they are campaigning to give people to option of selecting against autistic genes, but nobody has to take them up on that offer even if it does become a reality.

I remember watching the video they made interviewing the parents; it was a bit sacharine, and I agree with everybody else who was disgusted when the mother said she'd thought about killing herself and her child (with the child on her lap) but the statistics show that it is not a lone view and people like this do need help before they do burn out and harm their child. I hope they stop making ads like that though, because it almost suggests that it's ok to think stuff like that. Perhaps with input from people who actually have autism/aspergers, they will.

QFT. Autism Speaks isn't perfect and there's plenty of criticism that can be leveled at it, but they aren't the worst group ever.

Also, prenatal testing isn't genocide.

Well, no, but the end-result after several generations, is the same.

There are always going to be autistic people. Not everyone aborts their children or chooses to go through screening tests, and sometimes prenatal tests aren't completely accurate.

I doubt more than 1 in 10 would keep the child.

I believe about 90% of pregnancies where Down.s syndrome is present are aborted
