It doesn't have to be that way.
In a commentary Goodwin co-authored for the medical journal The Lancet he says that specialized training of medical professionals and novel interventions geared to people with sensory issues can help break down barriers that stand between individuals with autism and better mental health.
Many features of autism—such as socialization challenges, limited communication abilities, sensory sensitivities, executive function issues and intellectual impairment—can complicate social interactions, increase stress and reduce coping skills that can collectively lead to anxiety, depression and suicidal ideation," Goodwin says.
Complicating this challenging scenario is the fact "most medical and mental health providers are not trained in autism and thus not equipped to provide adequate mental health supports," says Goodwin, director of Northeastern's Computational Behavioral Science Laboratory.
One example The Lancet commentary gave is when autistic women with eating disorders are assumed to have body image issues but are actually confused and challenged by the process of food shopping and cooking. They may also suffer from food sensitivities.
Misdiagnoses and inappropriate care can lead to feelings of hopelessness, isolation and despair in autistic people and their caregivers, the article says.
In addition, crowded waiting rooms, overstimulating offices and reliance on verbal instructions and coaching can cause autistic individuals to experience debilitating sensory overload, Goodwin says.
"Many autistic individuals report that they find the number of instructions they receive, from scheduling to following prescribed intervention regimens, complicated, confusing and hard to remember or follow," he says.
It's not as though autism is an extremely rare condition.
Goodwin says it's important that medical and mental health professionals receive better training in autism via overviews of the condition, clinical rounds and adoption of evidence-based procedures to accommodate the needs of autistic people.
Interventions could include improving parental sensitivity to the needs of autistic children and also providing mental health supports for caregivers raising a child with autism, he says.
Partnering with underserved communities and co-designing interventions with the help of autistic individuals will help raise the quality of care where it's needed most, the article says.

“My autism is not a superpower. It also isn’t some kind of god-forsaken, endless fountain of suffering inflicted on my family. It’s just part of who I am as a person”. - Sara Luterman
I believe it's because of diagnostic overshadowing...
And it's not just the unaccomodating system and settings around the certainty, sensory and communication issues.
In this case, autism is being blamed for everything instead of looking for the consequences of the individual circumstances and outcomes.
Or thought all of the distressing factors are "part of autism" or it's all autism's fault.
Kinda the same as how people refuses to acknowledge that intellectual disability has very different needs from autism alone.
Kinda the same brag where one will attributes one's giftedness to autism.
Or that anxiety is autism. Or that autism is simply ADHD plus. Or autism is just depression and trauma.
They just blame it's autism -- not autism AND whatever. Or if that's the case, that whatever is "a part of autism".

I am very pleased to see this thread. This is an important issue that has been neglected for a long time. I think it is particularly likely that people with anxiety and/or depression or any mental health issue experience the lack of attention required to other medical issues. (When you get really old, the framework expands to "its just old age" as well). I would like to see much more investigation on the medical experiences of AS people, contrasted with that of neurotypicals; I think there may be a big gap between the two.
Its not easy to advocate for yourself against biases in the medical profession if you are "different" in any way, and the stigmatisation of AS people - though lessened now - has done great damage and still has real life impacts.
You are now dealing with most MDs these days are only interested in the least amount of work to get the most amount of money . For their few minutes of time they spend with their patients and now health plans/ Health insurance, have decided what gets treated and how much they will pay medical providers for their time per patient . There by inspiring Doctors to not investigate co- morbidities, and that is with all patients . But especially any they can blame on the patient .To cast the blame onto the patient rather then reveal their limitations on treating patients .( corporate medicine on a large scale for Profit) = mediocre Mefical for all . But older persons and those with any kind of potential mental differences . Are easiest to cast those ( Not So Professional Opinions ) upon those same people .
And if you are thinking from a Corporate Eugenic point of veiw . Those same persons might not be able to meet means requirements for gainfully employable persons . Am Sorry to share this but have watched changes in the medical establishment, due to serious health requirements due to serious old injuries when much younger. Requiring ongoing interactions with various medical professionals. Cannot believe the what I saw was medical incompetence , that I found was actually the interferance by Health insurances wishing to save money by not treating the patients with higher medical requirements . Its actually quite disgusting . Its enough to make you wonder ,What the idea of the Hippocratic Oath was all about? . Think a person whom has no experience living in your body, making a medical opinion, that you can easily tell has little or no being on ,what you known is your personsl health experience with your own body..
