No, I do see where he is coming from you guys... I agree with him to an extent because there are some NTs out there who don't respect what the needs are for someone who is autistic, especially like me. I have moderate autism and for me I get more ignorance than the typical NT does.

I've been in life skills and treated like I wasn't autistic or disabled at all. I was treated like I had to be a rolemodel to the others... DURING MY FIRST YEAR. In High School, I couldn't get what I needed, such as noise-block headphones to help with distractions and sensory issues. I had a teacher who sent me into a meltdown mode because she wouldn't let me go in a separate and quieter room to work while the other students were making noises in the kitchen and distracting me. I was almost in TEARS because of it. I had let out a sigh to calm myself and try to stimulate myself and she yelled at me for sighing at her rudely and the same thing when I placed my hand on the desk to think, she accused me of slamming it on the desk. I was almost ready to smack her for putting me through that almost meltdown. I wanted to just run out of the room and get out of there.

Bottom line is, he does have a point. Most people who aren't autistic do get more ignorance than someone who doesn't. We are more likely to get ridiculed for doing something we need rather than NT doing it just to concentrate better. I should have had permission to be put in a room where it was more quiet and I could do my make up work... but the teacher chose to nearly set me off into an almost panic mode. Some people don't understand what is going on in the mind of an autistic. For me, I do cringe and fall into meltdown mode under pressure but I also have slight agoraphobia which becomes much harder for me to have panic attacks and not being able to escape to a place where I can be more safe.

Just wanted to throw that out there.

And also in high school, I was doing my best to thrive in high school and everyone kept telling me to try harder. I would cry to my mom on the phone at the nurse's office pleading for her to come get me out of school. Do you think I was doing my hardest? I was and everyone always expected, "try harder" instead of, "you tried your best so I'll give you the effort of trying". I needed to be given effort for trying IN ORDER to try harder and being pushed to the edge and thrown into meltdown mode.

For me trying harder always made me much less able to keep trying. I was trying and to be told I had to try harder, told me that I wasn't trying hard enough so I must not have been good enough to keep trying and give my best effort alone. Not every autistic person is the same you know, some autistic people are more mentally/developmentally challenged, sort of almost like I am and it can cause me to really fall hard on my ass.

In spite of attempting to fit in when trying some people fail. I never much concerned it and I think the aspie groups are similar to this like high school is. To me the two are just as complicated and socially demanding then the other. One just happens to have some life experiences I can relate to when I pay attention to it. I don't however believe a strong vested interest in fitting in is necessary with any group or type of person. IT's best to be yourself and happy with that as otherwise it can be sad to some like expressed above.

Well my math teacher in high school. you know the real "try harder and if you don't you are lazy" type of teacher. Well one day we were calculating the distances between cities on the surface of the Earth and I told the whole class that we would have a more accurate answer if we took into account the Earth's curvature. Well everyone told me that I was making it too complicated but I thought everyone was saying that I need to try harder. I guess assuming the Earth is flat is good enough for that math teacher who told me that I need to try harder.

I find the claim that this Yahoo poster made about chromosomal (genetic/hereditary) conditions being incurable. My take - give it another ten or twenty years. I have my doubts that we'll exist as a community as gene-targeting drugs become more common.

I went to an all boys High School in the late 70's and early 80's.

I was caned [corporal punishment] often for talking to much in assembly and in class. I did not know back in those days that I was on the spectrum, and neither did my teacher's. I was branded as being lazy as I did not do well in my exams. I had learning difficulties. Due to what I experienced as mistreatment I left High School early without completing my basic education.

I talked when I was nervous, it's a natural response for many.

I did not return to education until I was 30.
If we experience a negative educational experience it can make one depressed, and many years may be spent on recovery from such negative experiences.

We can move on/beyond the limitations of such events.

Thank you for reading my post.

Hello Androbot2084,

I think we have to see the difference between physical pain and emotional pain. Often we can not tell the difference.

I understand your posts. I think you can study on your own in regards to your interests, I know I have.

I like to study on my own in that way I can progress at my own speed. I also check back in for confirmation of progress from time to time. I have often found this to be quite positive, even when I receive feedback that requires change. This is good as it indentifies where we can go next.

Have a nice day and thank you for reading my post!

Autistics are immediately denounced as idiots for being slow learners. Didn't anyone ever tell the teachers that slow and steady wins the race?

Well I am not really a slow learner......I taught myself to read when I was 5, but I do process immediate things slowly sometimes which throws people off because I am that intelligent but slow person. Like earlier my moms boyfriend was asking me a question and for some reason I thought he had called my mom and was on the phone with her so two minutes later I am like 'oh were you talking to me?' Things like that happened at school pleanty of times as well.
