What I most vividly remember from the ESPN article is that his Mom is on his side.

I think just averagely supportive, just realistically supportive.

(and frankly, I wish my parents had been supportive like that, but they have their own issues)

Very well done. I really enjoyed it! I am a 44 year old woman with Aspergers and was finally diagnosed when I was 41 so I know the frustration of knowing something was different about me and the way my brain worked and not knowing why I felt 'different'.
Also, I have a 10 year old son who has shown some Asperger-ish tendencies, so I could relate to the Mom in this piece as far as being frustrated with dx's, the not knowing what could be the issue with her son. (At the moment, the dx for my son is Adjustment Reaction Disorder. )
Good work by ESPN on a spectacular young surfer!
