Autism speaks?

Is the name Autism Speaks/speaks oxymoron?
I hate them so much that this question is irrelevent 31%  31%  [ 9 ]

The organization named themselves that because they believed that people with autism did not speak. They thought that they would be somehow providing a voice for people with autism in the same way that providing a "voice" for any group means representing them, as in the metaphor, "the voice of [a group]".

The oversight was that, of course, people with autism can and do speak, and do not care for what Autism Speaks is pretending they're saying. Even when autistics themselves can't use words, they do communicate; and so do their families. Autism Speaks is incorrectly named because it does not represent autistic people; it slanders autistic people by claiming we are saying things that we are not actually saying.

Autism Speaks could be personificating the pervasive developmental disorder that is autism, but the way you explained personification is incorrect.

Personification would be about the actual autism, not the people that are autistic.

Personification.

Example: The jealousy of my brother made me do it.

Metonymy.

Example: The White House said.

What I think was being said is that it is AS absurd to claim that Autism/PDD-NOD speaks as it is to claim that 'red hair' speaks (or for that matter that a paper clip can speak) :?

In my opinion, it just doesn't make sense for a person to run a campaign without knowning a simple clue about autism and they only see the negative side to it so instead, they want to cure autism but the thing is that they say that they are "Autism Speaks" but yet it seems like they do the speaking for them and not giving people with AS/Autism a chance to speak their minds. :(

I voted yes but without the baggage. I just can't say I hate them. I dislike how they operate, but I don't hate them. I think they mean well, but (and this is a big but) they don't allow us to speak. So does it make sense for them to call themselves Autism Speaks if we are not their voice? Of course not. We don't need them to speak for us---we have a voice. So, let's just ignore them. Are they ignoring us? What's the difference? I think the WrongPlanet is truly the place where our voice is heard. This site is a powerful influence.

That is probably the most gracious comment I have read about them on WP.

I know they are in the background and a lot of people here are upset and annoyed (in varying degrees) about them.

I just leave them and their agenda in the background but I did want to take issue with their name and I voted as you did.

Silly name; cos the name is silly (without the baggage) :D

I have AS, and I don't see the point why it should be mentioned, please note that Autism Speaks mostly wants to get rid of classic autism.
