In addition, I like several of the companies on that list, and also, some of my favorite athletes and musicians support either Autism Speaks or TACA.

Am I disappointed that they do? Certainly.

But will I stop listening to a certain musician or stop supporting a certain athlete? In the words of Mike Doughty, no f****' way.

I agree wholeheartedly. I refused to get the RTS game Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 when it came out, even though I had seen reviews and was looking forward to playing it, because I found out that supreme b***h Jenny McCarthy played Agent Tanya on the Allied campaign. This was up until about a couple of weeks ago, when I played a mission in the game. Now I'm going to get it this summer once school ends.

Basically, even if every aspie boycotted a product for reasons such as the above, the people who make said product would still get profit off of other ignorant people, so why deprive yourself of something you want just because buying it supports a cause you dont agree with? They'll just find other people to buy it.

Of course, that doesn't mean I have to like Jenny McCarthy, and once I get the aforementioned game I will be saving some extra ammo for Agent Tanya with the Soviet and Rising Sun factions.

I disagree, boycotts DO work. But we have to get the message out about AS *and* these companies. As really these companies only care about the money, so they think it will improve public opinion if they support AS. But if public opinion begins to turn against AS then more and more people will boycott. They care about sales, so get the word out but also, vote with your dollar.

Am I the only one finding it hilarious that both Autism Speaks and Asperger's syndrome have the same initials?

"We must stop AS!"
"But dude, don't you have AS?"

Agree. Boycotting is a weapon, it has no use without bullets, which are the people. It's a method of resistance - but we also have to build a resisting population.

It's not something to do instead of spreading awareness, it's something to do together with it.

In addition, I don't like paying people who declare I shouldn't have been born. Call me naive or say I'm too dramatic, but I feel it's everyone's right to know who these people are.

your average person out there has no idea that Autism Speaks is not highly thought of by those with Autism. And as for BofA, there are a host of legitimate reasons not to support them.

I think the only one I would ever have purchased from was Lindt. Oh well, Haighs is better, and locally made too (not sure how easy their chocolate is to find outside Australia, but if you're into chocolate and you find some it's well worth it).

Thanks for posting the black list. I won't buy, bank or visit these companies in the future.

As a person with diagnosed AS, I'm trying to get more informed about what the "community" has against Autism Speaks. I thought that the organization existed to help people on the autism spectrum.

I'm going to read up on it. Either way... I really don't think that boycotting is the answer.

Why is my company not on the list? Only the big ones?

You should also stop paying taxes, for most research is government sponsered, and stay out of Universities, Medical Centers, for they are all working together on this.

The CDC is the main force of evil, they have commited genocide on Small Pox, and you are next.

While you are at it, boycott food, for it is the product of scientific research.

1/100% running a Boycott, of which most disagree, and most are broke.

This is almost as bright as the six who take to the streets claiming to be a national organization.

$134 Million raised for science, in five years.

Please do boycott us all, we can live much better without the anti science fringe wackos.

Please start by boycotting Wrong Planet, where the ads do run, and many people do support the advance of science.

They force you to pay taxes. They don't force you to pay for Toys R Us. Quite a difference.

As for comparing Small Pox to Autism... Well, really? Do I REALLY have to explain the difference?

And do I really have to explain the problems with Autism Speaks, and no, it's not "advance of science"?

Tinmaiden, you asked a question and I'm sorry no one's answered yet. Let me be the first. Autism Speaks portrays autistics as constantly and invariably suffering, and causing suffering to others. Autism Speaks has taken steps to silence actual autistics who try to speak up, instead claiming that they can speak for us. Their stated goal is to eliminate autism, which many of us consider a core part of our identity-- in effect, no different from saying you want to eliminate red hair. They fund tests to try to find a test to determine whether or not an unborn fetus will one day become autistic, so that all autistics may be aborted rather than allowing us to continue. No member of the board of directors is autistic. They have portrayed autism as something that causes mothers to want to kill their children. Listen up, if you want to kill your child, there's something wrong with you, not the child. (Barring a case like anencephaly; if you catch that when you can't fix it but after it's too late, there's no reason not to abort in cases of complete anencephaly, which is always fatal immediately at birth, except in rare instances when the individual goes on to work at Autism Speaks. )

Inventor, yes; the autism community does not have the purchasing power to succeed alone, and further, boycotting all companies that render any aid of any sort to Autism Speaks may be impractical.

However, what might work is to actually alert the companies to the fact that there are calls for boycotts within the autism community. They won't listen on moral grounds, but "hi there, I was a customer, but now that I know you support Autism Speaks, I and all my friends are going to stop shopping here" will get their attention, I guarantee it. I wasn't a customer of the companies on the list to begin with, and it would be immoral to lie. (In future, I will continue to avoid them, and if there ever arises a time when I would have bought something except for my boycott, I'll tell them.) If anyone here IS a customer, however, and if you do believe in moral purchasing, then don't just boycott, or they'll be left wondering why. Instead, yes, boycott, but also tell them why.

If we all feel something must be done, I guess the easiest step to do now is to know our "enemies", for start. I don't even care if a boycott won't work, I don't want to give my money to them.

s**t. I have an account with BofA (my card is ironically Autism Speaks. I hate the thing so much but it doesn't expire until August of next year. Ah well, at least I don't have to use it as much when I shop.)
I like Bath and Body works but some of their products are bad for my skin :? and I just went to Build a Bear workshop today. Personally, I think this store (or at least the ones in Oregon) is good for someone on the spectrum (this is JUST MY OPINION) but as far as Autism Speaks goes, the only advertising that goes on there is in the virtual world of Buildabearville when they have a virtual walk for autism every April (Me and Tokio won't be participating. We'll have better things to do I'm sure)
I used to use Ask.com but the site kept giving me a virus. Always good to use good ol Google.
