THe bigger question, honestly, is SHOULD it be cured...
any prenatal screening reeks of eugenics... any cure that that functions before the egg implants on the uterine wall makes us Genetically Modified Organisms...
Any Cure that is applied post birth needs to be considered carefully... as we have these difficulties, even if the faulty wiring is is corrected, we will still be habitual in our behaviors, and as such, a cure would do little for most of us.
With people on the lower end of the spectrum I would say definitely yes. On the higher end, maybe. In the end it doesn't matter too much, genetic engineering and cybernetics will be able to give everyone the chance to have our strengths without our weaknesses.
why definitely yes?
we/LFAs deserve to have a choice in our own lives to and in fact we are given this as much as possible when we live in residential care;its hard to understand why the autistic spectrum always sees us with lower respect, its possible am misunderstanding the point people are trying to make but whenever have come across this point; it feels patronising and soul destroying; exactly why do
we need curing?
we are all different and with support can do good things, such as contributing to society.
for example, had been taught over a year using easy read and symbol methods how to do basic incubation and chick hand rearing and with support have raised several flocks successfuly, had incubated and hand reared the best friends of mine;two year old chickens in avatar,am currently raising a flock for the parent of a fellow resident and getting paid for it! being an ex service user of theirs was even offered a large non pay back grant by the national autistic society recently to turn it into a high supported business but it isnt possible to set up in a residential centre.
am not suffering at all though did used to be when was in a terrible service four years ago because was completely misunderstood, neglected, physicaly, mentaly, sexualy and sensory abused, had over heard staff mentioning that am a burden on them and fellow service users most days and was even given blades and told to kill self with them;she just got suspended for that.
please tell why am
in need of a cure when am not the problem..
#the problem is society views us with such little respect and thinks we live pityful lives because that is how so many parents see it,they do not understand that we have a different view of our life and what it is like when we are in the right service.
#we are completely ignored by the disability discrimination act, when it comes to adapting services and places for us,many of us are unable to access the community because of this.
#they keep taking away support funding of ours making our lives more limited than they shoud be, am supposed to be on two to one ratio support, but the council has now told support staff they shoud just get a crelling houdini harness instead so am permenently strapped into the wheel chair when out; so they can stop using two staff, what takes the piss even more is they refused to fund the harness even though they have said we need to buy it-aparently because it wont be used for other service users.
#those of us over twenty five lost our access to special college some years back with the white[?]green[?] paper because it is assumed at this age point we have either improved enough to go into mainstream college or we can be left to rot in some crap council funded day centre,it is an absolute disgrace that they can say they did this out of equality for disabled people.
#they took away specialist sheltered work shops which were the only form of work some of us will ever be able to have-again,they did this in the name of equality, where is
our equality?
this is what we are working against, this is the social model of disability, everyone on the spectrum shoud get familiar with it.
