I went to fight a ticket in court. The deputy told his side of the story, and it was a complete fabrication.I told my side and the judge never looked up. I think she wasn't even listening. I argued with the deputy about the whole thing, saying that his story was incorrect. The judge still ruled against me.

That in itself switched my view of law enforcement. I now see them as nothing more than bullies. I've also seen cops abuse their authority.

What gets me is that if the good cops want to improve their image with the public, then why don't they also work to rid the force of the bad cops? This baffles me. Wouldn't they want to rid themselves of cops that give cops a bad name?

I was going to appeal the ticket, but after speakng with two lawyers, they recommended against it because the judge would give the deputys testimony more credibility than mine, and I'd still have to pay the court costs-$200.

Anyhow, I'm not supportive of police. Other reasons also apply.

I can't give my opinion on "cops" but I can give my opinion on "policemen" (British)
I punched someone in the face once and they were very nice to me. Very comforting and understanding.
I now have an Attention card, something that briefly explains my Asperger's if I'm in trouble with the police, so I think my next experience will be a good one too (that won't be the last time I'm arrested, I'm sure...!).
Do you have something like an Attention card over in America?

I don't believe in calling an entire group one way or the other. The cops in my family are awesome. The ones I've worked with? 80% were really cool. The one I dated? Total ass.

The closest thing we have here, is a little note in your file that says "It's been brought to my attention that you can be quite violent....." and then you're screwed.

They do a good job, they just need to get out of their cars and actually walk their patrols. Everytime I got to the UK I see at least one car patrol or police constables on their beat. In America, they're stuck behind their cars. There are plenty of walkable areas in every city, even at my university, they just need to get out of their cars more.

I saw police officers using ATVs around a strip mall on the southwest edge of the city :O
Security at my college walks around places.

Also I naturally have some bias against police. What with the historical fact of what they do to people like me and the structure of society/ruling class. Even If I know officers IRL still there is the historical baggage. What with me living where Haymarket and the 1968 DNC happened.

For the most part NWA and KRS1 have songs that reflect my opinion.
There are decent human beings who become cops. Unfourtanly most cops aren't decent human beings.

What the.....

Are you guys living in somekind of 1990s 'f**k the poe-lice' ghetto or something!? :O

It's called 'law and order'. If you have a problem with the police then you either deserve it or you need to contact the Independent Police Complaints Commission (or your country's equivalent of it). Simple as.

I think it hugely depends on the cop. Some go out of their way to do their jobs properly and make good policemen and women, whereas others are on some sort of power trip and abuse the system to their advantage and it's people like that that get under my skin.

Every community has its bad apples, and the thin blue line is no different. But my view of the police is overwhelmingly positive. There's room for improvement - the "kettling" approach to public order is idiotic, for instance, particularly since a kettle where the air can't escape is also technically known as a "bomb" - but I've found them infinitely better than the chavs and criminals that make life miserable for everyone else.

Cops are enforcers rather than peace officers now. The best of them have their hands tied as far as making discressionary decisions in situations, and there is lots of room for the rest to be real jerks when dealing with people.

It ‘s not that simple where I live, because we do not have anything equivalent to an independent police complaints commission. We have a dependent authority. If you wish to complain about the police, you complain to the police and the police investigate the police and usually clear the police of having done anything wrong.

I have pretty bad experiences with cops. They tend to come whenever someone thinks I'm in trouble, which may be as soon as I walk the streets alone...I am blind, so some people think somehow I shouldnt'be out int he streets or something (I also have an odd gait so look sort of weird). A times the cops have really treated me disrespectfully, pushing me into their vehicle with force etc. ON the othe rhand, sometimes the police were correct for coming out to pick me up, eg. when I was in a very severe meltdown and suicidal etc. about two years ago (I was so bad that I needed to be hospitalized).
