I have aspergers and the video at the begining of the topic really made laugh. I only recently heard about this stuff and its kind of ridicules, I think the reason I'm not offended by this is I cant take it seriously.

I just had to fish out your questions, here are some answers.

imbatshitcrazy wrote:
guys, are you sure they aren't only trying to cure low functioning autism? i mean i know a few kids with low functioning autism, and lets just say it isn't pleasent

I think there isn't made any differentiation in that.
I know some with low functioning autism too, I really respect the parents and caretakers who are willing and/or able to nurse these people.

imbatshitcrazy wrote:
also, do you hate the idea of a cure, or just the group itself?

I don't hate the group, it seems to me that most of the people on the AutismSpeaks forum are very concerned parents and other people, although somewhat malinformed and riled for AutismSpeaks cause. The organisation is another story entirely, I really question their motives.

About the cure: I think they are hunting for their own shadows at this point.
No solid proof by an unbiased scientific institute (for example The Salk Institute who published this article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/21074045, while the institute has clear affiliations with AutismSpeaks: http://www.autismspeaks.org/science/sci ... nature.php).

I hope this answers your questions.

Cheerfully,
Wallourdes

I've just found out that "Autistica" are the UK section of Autism Speaks.

One of our offices promoted World Autism Awareness Day (2 April) this year and gave their money to Autistica. I'd never heard of them and when I looked it up they're part of Autism Speaks. I'm hoping to have a word with them and organise something in our office as well next year, but have any cash raised going to a charity that supports the awareness and acceptance of ASDs rather than wasting money researching the "cure". :)

Fingers crossed...

Make sure the money goes to the National Autistic Society, they're the good guys. In fact, the reason Autism Speaks had to change their name in the UK is because the NAS gave them bad press for their I Am Autism video.

I'm recommending the National Autistic Society. They seem to have a clue! :)

As someone from another country looking in, NAS not only seems to have a clue, but seems to possibly be the best informed autism organisation in the world.

Autism Speaks is not a good organization. The don't allow people with autism to truly speak, and they support the false vaccine "theory." They put out advertisements portraying Autism as bad and evil, and something to be feared. They don't spend their money wisely, and have made videos, where they ask the families to not be clean. They even had one mother saying she wanted to drive her and her children off of a bridge. These people also support finding a cure, and fund researched to allow tests to be done on pregnant women to determine if their baby will be on the autism spectrum---so they can abort them. I'm okay with abortion, but not if it's for the reason that they don't want a child because they might be on the spectrum. That just feels to horrible to bear. They also don't allow real people with Autism to represent them, and they've shown this time and time again. They even try to silence people who speak out against them, such as the NT speaks parody debacle. In that case they even went so far as to try and silence a *child* who disagreed with them! They even try to silence people with opposing view points, and those who disagree with them on their forums.

They portray Autism as some sort of scary epidemic right on their homepage.

Yuethemoonsprite, if only we could. It is well entrenched for the forseeable future. I would settle for a name change. Even that would be an improvement.

How about something that doesn't sound contradictory. I know "The Wrong Foundation" (being that the Founders last name is 'Wright' and they are wrong about Autism.)

I find it ironic how their slogan says "Its time to listen" when all they do is ignore us!

Autism Speaks is an "organization" that portrays autism as a menacing, evil, unknown force: something that needs to be "fixed" or eradicated rather than something to be worked around, accepted, or made to come to terms with. They paint autism as a picture of shame, guilt and embarrassment, rather than acknowledging that people with both AS and autism have gifts, uniqueness and potential in life. They see their children as "stolen away" from them and defective rather than as complete human beings who have every right to exist as they do.

There are also no people with autism or AS taking any part in any of their planning committees, decisions or campaigns. It's ironic that they've named it Autism Speaks when virtually no autistics are speaking here: rather it's precisely the people who shouldn't be speaking for them: the people who mean well but are definitely not speaking for their welfare or best interests.

Although I do acknowledge the difficulties in raising children with autism and I sympathize with the parents involved, Autism Speaks distorts the concept of autism and instills shame upon those living with it, instead of offering genuine support and acceptance.

Also, Big Pharma, Big Media, Big Money and the government all have their hands in Autism Speaks pants.Autism Speaks was founded by an exec at Comcast/NBC/Universal, who has an autistic grandchild. To him, this was an embarrassment. I wouldn't be surprised if he thought like Bruno Bettelheim: autism is caused by crocodile mothers. Just like any businessman who sees the condition as an embarrassment, he tries to make it disappear, by medicating it away, as well as practicing eugenics and Social Darwinism.

Oh yeah if I had something that was embarrassing, I would certainly make a song and dance about it, and start a foundation so everyone knew about my embarrassing thing

My point exactly. Why do you think he has very little contact with his daughter and grandchild? The same reason my father and I never got along. Dad went out of his way to make me look like a jackass, at any time in any place. If I objected, i was told to stop being a p**** and be a man. He was actually ashamed of me to the point I hid in my room most of the time, something I still do to this day.

Oh thats pretty poor.
I'm not in anyway embarrased by my son. Actually I'm quite proud of my little guy.
Maybe the only time I was a bit embarrased was when he was running around a swimming pool in his diaper trying to get in, with me chasing him half dressed! But that was only me feeling embarassment about my situation as everyone was staring at us
