Inventor, is Wrong Planet Alex Plank? Is Wrong Planet Zeraeph? Is Wrong Planet any one person or idea?

If we are not to take their PR at face value, then what is Autism Speaks.

I've given a far more detailed response over on the Speaking and Listening thread. I really don't want to jump all over the place.

Could we discuss Autism Speaks in one thread? Pretty please?
It's not a good idea to take ANY pr at face value.

Agreed. That is, however, a two way street. We can't get upset by words like "cure" or "epidemic" or videos like "I Am Autism" then also dismiss an interview in which they apologize and claim to be making changes.

You can't only take the bad things at face value.

"I am Autism" was made by parents of a classically autistic child, and posted by Autism Speaks." If we take it to be a completely informed representation of all autistics, then yes, it is absurd and offensive. If we see it for what it is, a misguided video made by distraught and confused parents that represents one segment of the autistic community, and does not represent that segment well, then it is still absurd, but there is no reason to be up in arms about.

If we take the word "cure" to mean the end of autism and all autistics, then yes, it is offensive. But if we apply the meaning that Dana Marnane gave in the interview, it is not.

People are picking and choosing what they want to believe and take literally. I don't think we should excuse the mistakes, nor do I think we should deny the progress or refuse to accept the appologies.

im not offended by the people in the video. it is the content presented. the idea that autism is a horrible thing that is somehow its own entity twisting all our minds.
