I got my very first piece of spam ever today. It was from Autism Speaks! :x

I had sent them an email telling them exactly how much I hated them and why, and they had the nerve to send me a piece of spam inviting me to some fundraising event! Grrr... :x

If they send you spam, send them a virus. That'll teach them...

Autism Speaks:

- Claim to speak for autism yet have nobody on the spectrum on their boards.
- Are not planning to find somebody on the spectrum to go on their boards.
- Play the pity card and patronise autistics.
- Treat autistics like tragedies or burdens instead of people.
- Claim that autistic people are NT people trapped in a shell.
- Sue anyone who launches even the slightest campaign against them.
- Fund for a cure that doesn't exist and isn't wanted by everyone instead of services that everyone would welcome.
- Aim all their material at parents, yet claim to speak for autistics.
- Don't listen to or address autistics full stop.
- Make videos that include people saying that they considered killing their autistics child and don't see the problem with this.

In short, no, I don't like them.

If you've got the guts to make a statement like that, you'd better have evidence to back it up.

being unemployed is really an irrelevant argument. There many social and cultural factors effecting people like us.

I am sick of the people, their claims, making policy decisions with out our involvement, not having an autistic person on their staff, claiming we are a burden to society, using science that does not have much scientific credibility, ignorance and waste of donations toward creating a cure when they could help many more by accomodating them. I could keep going, but I decided not to. Me very angry

I am going to start doing my own scientific studies of what can work for people the many people on the spectrum.

When in doubt, ask an autistic. Chances are, they're obsessed with what you need to know.

Autism Speaks will NEVER speak for me

wow! how do you do that? I have supported myself since I was 17! If I sat around, I had no home!

so. . how do you get to do that?

Merle

Are you MOST aspies?

Last I checked, the unemployment rate for aspies was pretty damn high.

If that is true that you can surely provide evidence for your claim rather than attacking aspies who have and do support theirselves

Where did I attack self-supporting aspies? Do YOU have any evidence for that claim?

So much for aspies being more logical and rational, which is a load of BS.

BTW, the aspie employment rate is 12%: http://www.angelfire.com/amiga/aut/employment.html

That's an 88% unemployment rate!

There's one thing you've missed: people can still make money when unemployed, and they have more freedom, and they might even have their own business. I certainly don't like the idea of working for a greedy employer, or being told what to do by an incompetent manager.

I hate Autism Speaks, because of the way that they portray people who are on the spectrum. I also hate the abuse that the parents display towards their children. Their idea of a cure is abortion and I think that their parents have watched Rainman one time too many. That's how they've learned to treat their kids the way that they do.

Couldn't you make a choice that's worse than "no"? because my immense dislike of Autism Speaks goes far beyond the word "no".
