A representative, not the representative.

I think it's great that she's in the public eye. In a way all she's doing is saying "this is also what autism can look like - we're not all the same".

As far as the modelling industry goes: there will always be a need for models, and fashion can be fun. The problem is not modelling per se, but the way it can be distorted. And being a model is probably hell these days, though I don't think it needs to be. So good luck to Heather - hope she steers her way through all right. Film (a major interest for me) is like that, too. You can focus on how bad things are, or you can focus on the potential and hold out for that.

Also for those who doubt that she has aspergers, did you watch the show?

Do you remember the having to pose while being held as a guy ice skate and posing while jumping on the trampoline? She definetly showed it there.

Remember her doing the crawling on the floor and she couldn't pull off the sexy crawl?

Remember how she couldn't get the words out on stage and for the commercial shoot?

Remember how the girls were talking about her as they sat out in the pool and Heather was inside holding her stuffed animal and just off in her own world?

Remember her getting lost at the end which led to her dismissal?

Remember how she forgot to eat and fainted?

She was alot of people's favorite on the show because she wasn't a mean catty girl like the rest.

She was also being corrected by Tyra to stand up straight like the other girls. Heather may also be taking medication. She also has adhd.

I'm frankly tired of hearing dumb words being tossed around like "He doesn't LOOK autistic. She doesn't LOOK autistic."

People associate stereotypical looking autistic to ugly and down syndrome. Why? This is all the media usually shows.

It gives even more of a false implication and since people are so prone to judge based on superficial traits, they get the idea that in order to be autistic you also must be ugly.

By those standards, this must mean that Age1600 is not autistic at all. She's just too pretty.

Poopylungstuffing must not be autistic, she's just too pretty.

Meowpurr I wasn't aware of those other things. It really was just right after top model was on all the guys kept talking about how pretty she was, and that made me feel like, well great now I have to feel I need to meet the photoshopped airbrushed image in the Asperger's community? I'll admit I'm wrong, but it also was wrong for the guys on wrongplanet to drool over Heather too. To make the Aspie women in the chat feel like now they have to measure up to her, that's just as lookist as anything else.

I can't believe someone would actually attempt to conceal what is basically envy and resentment with bogus claims about being unrepresentative and other such nonsense.

Maybe us women have refrained from drooling and we must find people to drool over. Why are guys more open about such things?

If you say that you're a representative of only some, you're truly a representative of none. A representative like that wouldn't have any power.

I don't care for Heather, but it's good to see that she showed a wide public that being AS doesn't mean you must be an opposite of her. I hope it confuses some people, making them question their views on 'that mysterious autism'.

That AS doesn't say anything on how diverse the people with it are is something people only get in touch with on the grand scale if they see lots of different well-known representatives.

Aspies can do whatever they want in their life. They have rights too just like everyone else, not discriminate.


I work in a hotel, does that mean I am giving everyone a false thought that all aspies can have jobs but they can only work in a hotel picking up laundry in the halls?

I also recall hearing people complain when I was seen in the media, that I somehow "made it seem like" all autistic people were fat and ugly.

Now if someone's thin and conventionally pretty she gets criticized the opposite way. It's a catch-22, seems to mean "no autistic person should get any media attention at all" in the end.

Have you forgotten about Craig Nicholls? He's been considered around the WrongPlanet as a rather adorable male Aspie to drool over.

Who is Craig Nicholls? I'll google him. Yeah, I have noticed something. There are alot of threads pertaining to physically drool worthy females but females don't typically make such threads.

Is it just a difference between females and males or is it how women vs. males were raised and perhaps it closed off an area for women and maybe women feel like they are left out and feel confined?

It could be that women are a little more sensitive and aware of how it feels to have to be apart of the physical beauty heirarchy and knowing that there are always more physically beautiful women out there in an abundance where as males don't generally care as much about their own looks. Keyword is generally. There are always exceptions to rules like bodybuilders.

Then there are also males when asked if you were gay, who would you like? They always go after the really muscular males. I find myself baffled because I don't find really muscular males attractive. I try to think about what life would be like with an obsessive bodybuilder and then I start to think it would probably suck.

So maybe females are understanding that beauty isn't always bliss and it can be quite competative which brings on negative insecurities within themselves so to counter that, they try to not view males the same way that they themselves are viewed because they know from experience how awful it can be.

This is why males don't understand. They aren't feeling the pressure of looking good as much as females. Magazines, media very few are immune to the illusions except for those who become aware and take action within themselves to understand the reality.

Women often turn negative feelings and insecurities inward and then push them outward onto those who they were around that had that effect on them even if subtly. The only thing you can do is deal with your own insecurities because nobody else is going to make it better for you. If anything just make it worse as people feed off of those insecurities.

Women can combat these feelings by:

(positive approach)

Looking from within and realizing that magazines are not making them think these thoughts. It takes two.

Basically an inner approach and analyzation.

(fun/negative approach)

catfights

(fun/positive approach)

Drooling over other guys and not holding back.

(negative approach)

lashing out and blaming everyone else.

Women are the most repressed regarding sex.

I am not sure if it is in fact just social conditioning or if it's just natural. Maybe both, maybe not.

Anyways, if you need a girl to attack, I'm here for you.

Actually, I think Heather is only a small representation of a bigger issue, and I can definitely "grok" what you are saying there. Yes, we do live in a beauty-obsessed culture. I tend to agree with you, there is a definite double standard in regards to women. As I am involved in theater, I see this issue coming up again and again, and I see how it wreaks havoc on the psyches of my young female students. It is unhealthy and dehumanizing, and I truly hope it will change, the sooner the better.

As for models, well; I know many would disagree with me, but I find most of their looks, at least in pictures, quite boring. "Perfect", maybe, but for me most of them remind me of a theater piece that has been so over-rehearsed- though it may be technically perfect- all the life has been beaten out of it. The pictures I see of models lack individuality, and all look the same after awhile; "ya seen one, ya seen em all"....(okay, I have a bit of a facial recognition problem, but still....)

In any case, my personal Aspie role model is Dan Akroyd. Never mind that he´s a man and I´m a woman, I just love comedy!

Women and men are different. Women and men both have different perceptions of what they are looking for in mates.

For men it is superficial attraction as number one important. For women it is personality or more inner traits especially security over weak demeaner.

If both males and females all were brainwashed into thinking there was no difference and to suppress every little truth regarding the nature of attraction then everyone would be living a lie that they thought was truth and get really depressed over it.

Some of that is going on right now actually. There is also dissappointment from such illusions.

It is kind of depressing that on the one hand the aspie guys have Einstein and Bobby Fischer, while on the other hand the aspie ladies have.... Heather. Maybe if she had gotten the attention for her art it wouldn't be so depressing, but yoshi is right, being born beautiful is not an accomplishment.
