For every person who snaps like that, you have lots of psycho antis that call for smokers to die, for them to be denied employment, for them to be physically attacked...

Car fumes don't stink as badly as fag smoke because most of the fumes produced are water and carbon dioxide. Most smokers are ignorant and try to use any poor excuses to try and justify their filthy habit, are in denial and anyone who sympathize with smokers is ignorant as well. Did you know that one of the gases in cigerette smoke which I was suprised to see is the carcinogen radon which is a radioactive gas. Its obviously in very small quantities. Every time someone light up and smoke a few alveoli are destoyed making gradually over time breathing more difficult.

Ignorant of what exactly?

Smoking isn't a habit, they're not in denial of anything, and we are all perfectly aware of the harmful effects of smoking.

It really doesn't smell as bad as you're making out, you know. In the grand scheme of things, do you moan about other people's perfumes? The foods that other people eat - curries, tuna, pizza, that sort of thing? Do you moan about other people's body odour as much? Do you want those banned too? How many things do you want banned to satiate your own misplaced sense of "offence"?

Do you have any hobbies? How about video games, movies, TV, drinking, sex, those sorts of things? The same sort of people who are so fanatical about smoking will aim sights on your preferences eventually, as they already are doing with drinkers and fat people. If you're a gamer, for example, you should know about the attitude to censorship from lobby groups and the powers that be.

Quote:

This is nothing other than a personal attack. Why are we 'ignorant' or is anyone ignorant? Smokers are aware of the risks - they've been told that smoking is bad for them in all sorts of ways constantly for the past 40 years. They couldn't possibly not know. If I told you the same thing over and over for ten years, would you come to me and tell me you didn't know that the thing was dangerous? There are 'no smoking' signs everywhere, massive signs on packets, powerfully-funded public health and lobbying campaigns that pump out their message of lies day in day out, people exhorting you to give up smoking, the bans that mean you can't light up anywhere you want to relax, the social stigma… need I go on?

Smokers choose their hobby in spite of it. They have to deal with constantly being told what to do, over and over again.

Really, you're not saying anything concrete other than what is usually thrown around my fanatical anti-smokers. People know. Non-smokers know. Anti-smokers know. Smokers know. They couldn't possibly avoid not knowing.

Rubbish; most of the people who suffer from that lung cancer aren't smokers in any case. Radon poisoning usually comes from building materials and other thing at home. Radon isn't a problem for people that smoke and certainly not for "passive" smokers. It's unrelated to smoking.

The obsessive zealots can't find even one single person that can be proven to die of SHS. They've got millions of potential cases to choose from, but cannot find one single person. What does that tell you? The anti-smoking industry is worth billions of dollars and is an enormously powerful lobby group.

Roy Castle, I repeat, was a cigar smoker and liked his booze too, so his widow said, so he doesn't count. In his case, he was blaming his death on something that doesn't exist.

Smoke is irritating when it's blown in your face, yes it can be smelly, but it's not a killer or even a harmer of non-smokers. It's not a big deal. The only people smokers are harming are themselves.

My basic question to you is: where do you think smokers should be allowed to smoke? Bear in mind that as well as this they've already been kicked out of places that specifically cater to them.

It's NOT about health, but about controlling people.

Well I am a smoker and I would like to know how I am ignorant...I mean this has been said more then once in this thread. And I would really like to know what about my 'habit' automatically makes me an ignorant person. But yeah smoking is very unhealthy, and I certainly would not encourage someone to start smoking.....but if they did make that choice then I have no say in it.

People who smoke are ignorant because they don't care about themselves and are risking getting fatal diseases. It causes the skin to go leathery, the teeth to go brown and bad breath. Smoking causes the ageing process to speed up. Just look at the turtle woman in Benidorm. Some smokers seem to rejoice in the fact that there filthy smoke annoys non smokers. Smoking is a discusting habit not a hobby. By smoking you are damaging your body. It takes about 10 yrs for a heavy smoker who has given up to get rid of the tar that has built up in their lungs. As for young people who smoke, it is their childish way of rebelling against their elders. There is a huge list of poisons and carcinogens in cigarette smoke. Hears just a few
cadmium
benzene
formaldehyde
arsenic
cyanide
napthalene
polonium
Radon gas is in cigarette smoke because of where the tobacco plants grows. Look it up. People who smoke have got a death wish. Cigarettes should be renamed "coffin nails". Smoking should not be allowed in any public places. They need to be phased out by increasing the price, making them more unaffordabe by increasing taxes and restricting where people can smoke. This will have to be enforced by on the spot fines and arrest for persistant offenders. It is difficult to avoid smokers. Just walking down the street in a city centre there are people smoking outside pubs and restaurants. Try walking into an office and there is smoking vermin hanging outside so you have to walk past them through this toxic cloud.

"Vermin"?

You're coming across as the sort of person that would support genocide with the tone of your language.

You're sick and full of hatred. I've never, ever met a smoker who talked about non-smokers this way. Ever. I've met plenty of people like you.

I'm still waiting for you to inform us why we are ignorant, so again - what are we ignorant about?

Many smokers care about themselves and are perfectly aware that they're risking fatal diseases - I know many smokers who are doctors, health-nuts, environmentalists, etc. - they don't have a death wish, they have an addiction that is largely out of their control. If smokers didn't care about themselves they'd not spend so much of their time trying to quit.

Smoking is not a hobby, it is not a habit, it is an ADDICTION.
They're already expensive, this doesn't stop people smoking because it's not a conscious choice they have control over and even if they did they shouldn't be forced to stop but instead they should be free to choose either way and supported if they wish to stop. Increasing prises just means the poor people who smoke are even poorer. People should not be fined for being smokers - as well as making poorer people even poorer again, that's like saying people should be fined for having cancer. Why make smokers suffer more - are you really so against smokers you'd rather see them suffer more? Why not help smokers stop?

Seriously WHY ARE YOU POSTING THE RISKS OF SMOKING?
Do you think you're the only person in the world who knows these risks exist? Sorry to inform you, but you're not, in fact smokers are FAR more aware of these risks than you, as well as the day-to-day effects of smoking of which you are ignorant. I could post an even longer list of harmful ingredients within cigarettes. If you want I can give you a full list of effects from smoking that you are probably totally unaware of, or give you a full description of my uncles slow death from oral cancer. Doesn't change anything, we all know the effects of smoking, and it doesn't solve the problem.

I am already aware of just about everything you said, also are those carcinogens in tobacco smoke in general or just most mainstream ciggerettes? they do have American Spirits for instance which are just tobacco no excess chemicals added I know they are not safer but from my understanding they dont have as many chemicals....and you honestly think I should be arrested for smoking a ciggerette? now if they are going to ban smoking in most public places they will have to at least provide a minimal amount of smoking areas where we can smoke.

So when's the last time you've heard of anyone dying of "pizza lung"? I suppose you've got a point about body odor, especially regarding those curry eaters.

The side as I see it if you say there should to be a law there probable shouldn't. I say this from experience just look at the way people over do a lot of things.
I mean to say if you band smoking you might as well as ban beaches, the sand has silica a know carcinogen, sun tan booths too many uv rays, all artificially colored drinks, any non organic food due to trace pesticides.
Im a smoker I have made the choice for my self I don't smoke in my house Ive all was smoked out side because I have children. If we want to ban some thing why not go for the most common reason for death food. Let just ban all foods that are bad for you and lets see whats left.

So when's the last time you've heard of anyone dying of "pizza lung"?
Not pizza lung, Pizza veins, heart disease the leading killer in the developed nations and just as controllable as smoking. But no one is going to ban ho-hos any time soon!
As for having to walk threw smoke out side building that is because the law prohibits employer from installing a inside smoking lounge in most states.

I think people should be arrested for smoking a cigarette in the wrong place like in public. When I walk down town I don't want to have to breath in other peoples smoke. If smokers want to ruin there health in private its up to them. Smokers especially the young think that they can get away with getting fatal diseases. Sunbathing does cause skin cancer but i'm not being forced to do it but with smoking I have to breath when I go down town where smokers hang outside pubs, offices, walking down the street. If the wind is in the wrong direction it blows in your face. I have the right to breath clean air when I go down town. Now think about what it is like to be diagnosed with lung cancer. To remove the cancer the surgeon has to remove some ribs to get to the lungs. I seen a program where this was done and the tumor was the size of a tennis ball. It looked like a conglomerate of ash and blood. After that the smoker has chemotherapy and there is no way on earth that they can start smoking again.

I'm glad you have enough self awareness to know that you should protect your children from the smoke. Many smokers don't go out of their way to protect their children from the smoke.

i find some of the attiutudes in this thread disgusting, yes directly disgusting.

this has nothing to do with health issues, air polltuion could account for as much of 3% of deaths in the large cities in america.
linkage

smoking doesnt come close to that.

it is a personal choice with personal consequences, as have been mentioned many times before i dont think smokers are against not smoking in public buildings or in an establishment where the owner doesnt want it.

@bloodheart smoking doesnt need to be a real addiction
it takes me 3-4 days to empty a pack and i often feel the need to hold breaks
i have quite twice, once for about a year and then again for about 3 months
both times i started again because i felt the rewards outweighed the risks.
while it is addictive it is weak enough for other impulses to overwrite it.

a real addiction is one you have no control over whatsoever, some smokers are like this but not all.
most simply dont want to quit.

@OP
every single human will hurt other humans in some way every day, it might be 20 causal links out, but still.
smoking hurts very few besides the ones whio smoke

Obviously when people are smoking...smoking aggrivates my asthma.

Quote:
How old were they generally when they lost their lives? If they were in their 70s, say, it might not actually be that but natural causes. The way I see it is that in most cases, they chose their lifestyle and were happy with it more or less. They had a good life when they were around and weren't languishing in care homes for the rest of their lives.

I know a lot of elderly people locally and a lot of them are very depressed because they know that the time's near but they can't do too much.

Smoking cuts *most* people's lives short. The smokers I knew who died from it, probably cut their lives short by at least 20 years. It's their choice, but watching someone suffer because of a choice they made (be it smoking, drinking, sky diving, etc) doesn't make it any easier on the survivor. I once had a French teacher who was into hang gliding. He was in his 50s & very energetic, very much into living. However, he was mortally wounded in a hang gliding accident that eventually took his life (after lingering on life support for weeks). Not fun for his family....there's an example for you of how something that he was addicted to changed not only his life but the course of his wife & children. It wasn't a typical accident since this was something he did on a regular basis. Before my mom passed away, she mentioned to me that she regretted smoking. She & a girl friend could smoke an entire carton of cigarettes in 2 days. 8O Towards the end of her life, her lung capacity had been affected by the heavy smoking. She also spent a great deal of time surrounded by smokers in her later years when she frequented casinos. It probably didn't help her out any. Some of the people who died were only in their late 40s or into their 50s. That's not very old really.

Quote:
This can be applied to a huge range of behaviours: drinking, eating too much (or "unheathily"), unprotected sex, extreme sports, football, boxing, running, lifting weights. The list goes on.

See my examples above.

Quote:
I think there should be designated areas for smokers that has good ventilation.

Quote:
Like outside? Smokers have already been banned from all bars, cafés, cinemas, shops, government buildings (and the car parks of government buildings!), even vans where the owner uses it for a business. Even if the general public are never going to take a ride in this van, it's illegal to smoke inside his own property. In Holland where this has happened café owners have rebelled at ordinances like this as they understand that it directly affects their livelihoods.

There are indoor ventilation systems that can help filter out smoke. Even outside, I've gone places where smokers' smoking have caused me breathing issues just because they were doing their thing standing right outside an entrance to a building. Apparently you feel that if non-smokers don't want to be around smokers (even if it's them polluting the air), we should just never leave home. I also was working at a job where 2 guys would smoke in the warehouse (illegal too), & if it caused me problems breathing, they thought it was funny. Yeah cigarette smoke makes me cough. It's not fake either. Nor is breathing an option.

Quote:
I also think if people are non-smokers, they shouldn't have to be subjected to such a harmful substance against their will.

Quote:
But they should also know when to quit complaining with the fake coughing if there's a guy sat two tables away with a cigarette, in a pub garden, in summer, outside. A lot of that is psychosomatic. They're whipping themselves up into a frenzy. They full well know that in summer, outside a pub, there are going to be people smoking. They have the entire pub to themselves. That they choose to sit outside and be offended - usually not for any real health reason, but just because they believe their right to dictate other people's actions is paramount - looks suspiciously like wanting to control people to me. They've bullied that smoker out of pubs, telling the government that there would be an influx of non-smokers to make up for smokers. That utterly failed to materialise. In fact, all that happened was that, while the pub got a few new customers in they were generally of a "two Cokes and a salad" sort who would very rarely go into pubs anyway. When faced with a huge number of your normal customers that drink day in, day out deciding not to bother, you're knackered. You can't set up proper smoking areas outside, because it's illegal and punishable by heavy fines. You can't let them smoke in your pub because informers are everywhere, there's a huge fine and it's illegal. So you offer food. In fact, that's the only way a lot of pubs today are really surviving - by offering food. So it's degraded pubs from being a place where locals would meet to enjoy a pint, a fag and conversation into vulgar "restaurant that serves beer" rather than "a pub that serves food" or in many cases closing down altogether or becoming Indian restaurants. In many city centres, a pub chain called JD Wetherspoons has capitalised on this, offering cheaper beer than in regular pubs to pensioners and aggressive younger men and women out on a night on the town. Later on at night, these tend to be very tense places.

I'd like to know how you can tell if someone is faking coughing. I cough when I am subjected to any substance that irritates my lungs. Just doing yard work makes my lungs react. I also complain when it happens in areas not designated for smoking. Been doing that since I was a little kid, when my dad or other family members smoked around me. My dad used to burn me with his cigarettes & laugh. So is that funny to you? That someone would burn a toddler with a cigarette? I have a natural aversion to them, & have many reasons to detest smokers due to the abuse I endured as a kid. As I said, breathing is not an option. I don't enjoy breathing in cigarette smoke, it's painful...it also causes me serious distress. So do think about the fact that not everyone reacts just to be mean. For some of us, our (non-smoking) reactions have to do with us just trying to survive. In this case, I'd either sit inside, or choose a place where people weren't smoking. I do not bully people smoking outside. That said, I find it ridiculous that some smokers must smoke right outside an entrance to a building & the only way to enter is through the heavy haze of smoke. I don't go around sucking off of tailpipes from buses or cars, why would I want to inhale someone's cast off smoke from their cigarettes? Also why is it some smokers will hold their cigarettes at arms length away which subjects non-smokers to more smoke? That's just rude!

Quote:
n Britain, the anti-smokers are perfectly fine with leaving the pub garden to the smokers, frequently elderly and infirm, in November or December when it's absolutely freezing and no-one wants to go out for a pint but come the time when any sane person actually wants to sit outside, they sit, fake coughing at the ready, whingeing about the "selfish smokers".

Trust me, smokers complain about the high cost of cigarettes, their health, the fact that they can't light up where they want anymore. It's just a sign of the times. Smoking is something that became hip since the discovery of the new world. Prior to that, smoking in Europe was pretty much unheard of. It's a nasty habit that should have never started in the first place.

Quote:
That's the other issue: in Southern European countries the smoking ban isn't such a big thing because smokers can be outside on the terrace pretty much all year round. That's not true of the UK.

Bad weather occurs in most places. Britain may not have wonderful weather year round, but other places have even harsher winters. If you want to smoke, you'll have to put up with poor weather conditions. I'm sorry, I don't feel sympathy for smokers. As I said, it's a voluntary affliction. Yes it's addictive, & yes the body has to have its nicotine fix or withdrawals can be really nasty. That's just one of the prices one pays for choosing to smoke. Smokers also run the risk of upsetting non-smokers. That's a bummer too!

Quote:
As I say, this has vastly increased the speed of the decline of the British pub. The traditional beer campaigning organisation supported this ban, and many of its members support further rules towards "irresponsible drinking". They can't see that, to anti-alcohol 'charities' (government mouthpieces in all but name - when the state funds them to the tune of 98% of their entire income, what else could it be?), they're considered the irresponsible drinkers. They wish to bring about a new temperance age.

Funny you should say this. I can remember when the smoking bans 1st started here in California, & people said much the same thing about bars & restaurants here too. It used to be you could smoke anywhere in California, & even workers in grocery stores & restauarants would be doing their job handling produce or meat or making meals with cigarettes hanging out of their mouths. Actually just the opposite has occured, since non-smokers have become the majority, & they are more likely to frequent places where they don't have to involuntarily inhale cigarette smoke. Your arguments are somewhat flawed unfortunately. Many people, some smokers included, recognize the fact that hanging out in a smoke-hazed area is unhealthy. I choose to avoid places like that at all costs. But it's sure a lot easier living in a place where smoking has been banned in most public establishments since the early 90s.

One other thing that repulses me about smokers. Why is it that smokers feel that it's ok to toss a lit cigarette onto the street when they're finished with it? I find it disgusting & revolting, it's also a form of littering.
