Agreed. I believe this shows that they are changing where their money is going. As I said before, why just sit around and complain about something when you can do something to change it for the better? Some people here seem to have an unrealistic view of how one improves society.

lau, nothing you said makes any sense to me. You seem to be getting your information from the wrong sources because most of you said is flat out wrong.

My sources of information were your videos and John Elder Robison's posts, this one in particular.

(And the online Oxford English Dictionary.)

Oh... and the post I linked to above...

johnrobison wrote:
Well Lau, if you want to get sticky about it . . . Wrong Planet does not have any money, because people do not donate enough to cover the running costs. So don't tell me the Wrong planet donors paid for anything on Autism Talk TV . . . they did not. Alex has that logo there for the purpose of cross promotion only.

I paid for them to go with my personal funds, so if anything, I personally sponsored those first videos but we did not say that when we put the credits together. Autism Speaks will reimburse some of my costs with their underwriting grant.

I wish what you said were true, that thousands of dollars pour in from grateful website supporters, but it isn't.

I missed that last bit. It's interesting that John ascribed a quote to me that I did not make... i.e. that I suggested, in any way, that Alex received much money from WrongPlanet supporters. I know he receives at least some money from them. I doubt that it is much. As he has never revealed any details, no one would know for sure.

The WrongPlanet Supporters program is a new opportunity for you to financially support the development of the WrongPlanet.net website.

I feel that using ANY of the donation money to fund the Autism (Speaks) TV videos is too much a stretch of the imagination for "the development of the WrongPlanet.net website."

Alex is wrong about a lot of things (as my next post will show) Lau. But he is right in this instance. You don't make much sense.

Wow it almost sounds that joining with Autism Speaks is a righteous and powerful tool and for the benefit of all Autistics.
Were this true you would be my hero Alex.

But let's scratch beneath the veneer a little and see what is exposed.
They lied to parents about the Mercury thing long enough to get the fear mongering generating a huge member support and relied on people desire, fear and want to help. They dried up funding of other organisations. They Sued anyone who stood in their way. They amalgamated any organisation with similar views. They used righteous ire to gain a foothold in Un and US government policy. They carefully selected big name scientists and populated their board with top names in Early Childhood and pre-natal and Birth disorder and defect Clinics. They dropped the Vaccine thing like a hot potato when that got showed to be a farce. But by that time they had big public companies and celebrities and legislators on board and were more than self sustaining. PR was in overdrive.
Then these visionaries started making their move on the Autistic communities themselves.
Once ensconced they will censor and control all Autism debate and the naysayers will look like conspiracy theorists.

You won't be a naysayer though Alex. I think by that time you will be that far in their pocket you will have even deserted the pretext of "not just complaining but doing something constructive for the good of Neurodiversity". You will have found a way to line your pockets and you will not be remotely concerned about what their impact is on Autistics and the stifled Autistic community. Even if you were you will not be a position to stand up and say they were no good. You would I think be smart enough to close your eyes to it and count the cash.

They have from time to time. Even 13 year old kids. They may again. But that is OK they are sponsoring us now so we all have a warm glow about this organisation now. We trust them fully.

I know this sounds mean, but I don't really trust them. I just kind of have a hard time trusting people after they've done something I think is wrong.

Yes actually they not only can but they must, you have to aggressively protect your trademarks or you'll lost protection. I think the biggest problem is the, puzzle piece and the phrase AUTISM SPEAKS. If the parody site had changed those two things enough that a person wouldn't confuse the parody site for the real site they would be ok IMHO and IANAL. The lawyers at Autism Speaks probably sent a DMCA style notice hoping to intimidate the site owner enough to avoid actually having to bring suit.

Satire is protected by copyright law. They cannot sue someone for using their trademarks for satire.

It's true...in fact, most satirical works are actually protected by law. As proof, I bought the book, Animal Farm, which is a satirical novel. (Then again, it is against Communism...I'm not sure why they can sue an autistic. Is there a big sign on us that says, "Sue here"?)

Wow, I just had a Phyliss Moment!

--In case you don't know who I'm talking about, she is a pelican in the game, Animal Crossing, who mutters sarcastic comments under her breath.

I'm unsure why they would sue them, and Autism Speaks winning...do they have it out for us...?

I'm confused. Would you rather they be using their money to sue autistics still instead of supporting autism talk tv? You can't have it both ways. If you're upset about how they spend their money you should try to change it instead. Or would you rather just sit around and complain. . .

Sitting here thinking about this, I have come to the conclusion that this could be a good thing indeed. What do we gripe about around here? Well...we gripe a lot about Autism Speaks. Ok...what do we want? We want them to understand us...right? We want them to hear our voices. Well, look what Alex has done. Look at what Autism Speaks has done. Interesting. By Autism Speaks supporting Autism Talk TV, at least now they have come into our realm. Maybe this is an important step in the direction of having our voices heard.

Agreed
