You believe then that there is such a thing as the autistic community?

When you talk about our cultural, social and political priorities, I can't help but wonder, who's we? Am I included? If the definition of "we" is all politically active autistic people in the world, then logically I should be one of "us", but I haven't seen evidence of any uniform priorities across different groups and countries. I have a lurking suspicion that if you described your priorities in detail, and if I explained them to my local autistic community, most of them would not agree. They might have largely similar values, but different battles, because of local cultural environments. And partly, they would also formulate their values differently, because of having grown up in a different culture. There are more things that shape communication than AS or autism alone.

Can't the same be said of countless other communities? I run into the exact same problem whenever I go to a Jewish community event with an international - or even regional - orientation.

What is the main theme?
The main theme still needs to be explored and discussed, but in my opinion, it is 'autistic communication':
The general public assumes autistics *can't* communicate. Our aim could be to show them that we have our own styles of communication and that it is *them* who are unable to understand our styles of communication.

Where are these Autistic communities you are refering to, KenG?
I am referring to the communities which are listed in the 'Global Registry of Autistic-Run Organizations' ( http://www.wrongplanet.net/postt58920.html )

It is possible to make a compilation. For example: "ASY - Suomen Aspergeryhdistys" could submit one article, explaining its own ideaologies and political priorities. "PAS – Personen uit het Autisme Spectrum" could submit a second article, explaining its own ideaologies and political priorities. ...
A main article could then be prepared...
After the main article is prepared, it could be submitted to some newspapers and/or magazines in Europe (or anywhere else in the world).

I would very much like to see this work done. I have suggested it a couple of times to a couple of different groups of people. It hasn't caught on, probably because of the serious amount of working hours involved.

It could help people in several countries get into the media, for example in conjunction with the Autistic Pride Day. Newspapers would love something well-prepared and multinational that they could just stick in without doing much work themselves.

Yes, but then they tend to have something in common that all the people involved consider significant enough to create the boundaries of a community. In the case of autism, many might feel that it's not quite enough, but that an autistic community in a small country represents itself only and is not part of any larger community. But this remains to be found out, as and when better international connections will develop.

The only time we need uniformity is if we want to take a certain action. Let's say they started a pre- natal scan to check for autism, which resulted in selective abortion. Then it would be our responsibility to fight that in a variety of ways. And having a leader to rally us could be useful.

Thank you HoxtonPaul, It is the same here, self elected non democratic, with intent of coming between autism and funding.

The only reason I could come up with why Alex should become President, is so there could be an election and throw him out.

The Interglatic Council of All Autism have noticed the formation of copycat groups, As the only member I refuse to reconize any of them.

I also think that if you wish to be taken seriously, UK is a silly name for a country.

To give credit where it is due, ignoring these non autistic self advocates is the best path.

The Interglactic Council has made a major grant to them of rope, the Council is sure that given enough rope they will solve the problem they created on their own.

I think what is is being seen, self advocates make one post, announcing world dominion from their eturnal capital and fortress of solitude, and no one replies. Active membership in the three leading self advocate groups seems to be three.

Every few months there is another post, claiming to be in charge of whatever has been in the news recently, and anouncing a jobs program where anyone with autism and a Doctorate in Computer Science, can get an unpaid inturn position.

They also cross post, figuring a post is more important if someone other than them mentions them.

All are equally ignored, posted right under the Do Not Feed the Troll sign.

The only result I can see from years of their efforts in self advocacy, is Autism Speaks is more popular. They are our neurotypicals to play with and make fun of. Being normal corporate suits, they are fair game for humor, UK, UK, UK.

I tried telepathic mind control to take over all autistics, all I got was an excellent knowledge of Amtrak trains and stations.

I can safely say nothing has made an impact on Wrong Planet. 4chan tried and could not dent our clueless selves.

As far as I know we have nothing like a NAS. My outsider view of it is like the Tooth Fairy, Santa, and the Easter Bunny, but works more often, but in a government job. It may be a publically funded Autism Speaks, that makes autistics aware of autism, for modest incomes, and lifetime pensions.

The Interglactic Council has defined autism as, that which makes me different than others, that does not make others different from others.

I would like to hear your views on autism, perhaps we can get together for a good laugh, UK, UK, UK.
