rationalism is ultimately nihilism and therefore self-defeating. thinking rationally is a fantastic ability that humans have, but its not the only valid perspective on reality, and it certainly isn't some sort of ultimate truth. taken to its extremes(which many individuals and governments have done) it results in a society where humans become selfish automatons, and freedom is defined by nothing more than individuals ability to pursue their own self-interest. that is a cold, lonely society that restrains not only human compassion and empathy but the freedom of human thought

its not the society i want to live in

So you want to live in an irrational society full of people who do stupid things without thinking them through (ie. the world as it is)?

Just one point: I´m quite sure I remember, in the specials or something, that the creators of the film "Gattaca" said that they made the film because this is the direction our world is going. Many of these things are already happening today, or at least on their way to becoming a reality. They felt it was necessary, at this point in time, to create this film for the good of humanity, and our future, as this seems to be the direction we are headed. I think that says something, don´t you?

no, but a rational society is ultimately a society of nihilistic automatons without compassion or empathy and i dont want to live in such a society either. there are aspects of the human experience other than our ability to think rationally. there is no rational basis for compassion or empathy yet its still undeniably a part of being human unless you're a sociopath

It makes no sense to protest the advance of science. It will continue. Nor can the application be protested, for it has not happened, and may never.

What does happen is children being aborted for their sex, which can be tested for. Take some, reproductive rights, then take all.

If there was some way to determine autism, I think there would be no way to establish the degree.

The only marker I can think of would be a genetic potential, which is likely carried by 10% to 25% of the population. As Asperger himself said, "In science and the arts a little autism is needed."

So any purely rational society that looks only at productive numbers of people, and starts protecting it's self from the potential of autism, is chosing a decline in science, arts, mathematics, music, and the results would show up within several generations. They would have gotten rid of a few auties, and most of their intelligence.

The example of their rational loss of intelligence, art, and their drab existance and falling economy would be fair warning for the less developed countries.

The only possible cure would be to bring in some autistic studs.

Deleting things from the human genome is not wise, for we know so little about the function.

What we have learned is that having children with your sister leads to some strange subtractions.

In the case of Europeans, their gene pool lacks diversity, and it seems it has produced the most autism, science, art, industry, invention, technology.

What we can do, and what we should do, are different.

There can be no answer till we are faced with the reality.

Birth control and abortion were recently illegal. There are still two or more sides, but we have agreed that the good is at least equal to the bad.

Women's rights have advanced since they could delay having children, first getting an education, and becoming able to be employed. The resulting children came into a better world. Healthy mothers and babies.

Since women do produce the future, and the future is better with a healthy start, being well fed through childhood, getting an education, delaying reproduction has produced better conditions.

Baron Cohen has reached the same conclusion, getting rid of autism gets rid of science.

Getting rid of autism is going to lower the quality of the medical and research professions, who will be running any program.

The question is would you have an intelligent and creative child with some quirks. From what we know this question would be put to the Professions, University Professors, everyone in IT, and it is not a one time deal, all children from that couple will test the same.

I think they will accept the risks.

If you preach compassion, why do you support genocide?

Its not fascist - its realist. Most people are sheep and therefore have shepherd. Unfortunately shepherds are usually chosen poorly

because i dont want to slow the progress of technology or set back womens rights to satisfy your idea that an autistic embryo is somehow super special and precious and must preserved at all costs

I never said that either. Quit putting words in my mouth. I'm just saying that abortion on grounds of autism is wrong. Just because I think slavery is wrong, does that mean I think that blacks are superior to whites? No.
