This is arse. I also recall a tale of a traveller in Mongolia visiting an ophanage where young children who we would call 'special needs kids' are abandoned by their families and wear rags and are fed slop out of a pig trough.

I was treated badly as a kid, but I've heard of a LOT worse, here in America and especially overseas. I know that the mentally ill (and the physically ill) beg at subway stations in Buenos Aires because Argentina's society is ruined and people are too busy trying to survive to help. In Colombia the disabled are murdered outright by paramilitary gangs. Before that, they are abandoned to their fate by their families. Six decades of civil war have made Colombians callous; if you can't support yourself, the thinking goes, you need to die and get out of the way. My biggest fear is that in the future it will be permissible to murder the disabled in America as well. It already is, to an extent.

This is definitely an example of an extremely important issue that is relevant to our daily lives, yet something that nobody really cares about. The treatment over there is cruel, and we need it to stop! I know this will offend some people, but can we please put global warming and the economy, as well as Curebie-ism (the obsession with curing Asperger's, Autism, ADHD, Bipolar, whatever) and care about the abused and opressed special needs kids all around us?

until 1985 in Alberta Canada anyone who didnt score high enough on their IQ tests was mandatory sterilized. Also if you look up the sleep room the Canadian government allowed the CIA to preform experiments on Canadian mental patients. Women with mild postpartum depression for example had to be taught to walk, talk, and even potty train again.

in the 1980's i wouldnt let drs in my mind. good thing too had they known things would have really sucked for me.

These countries are s**tholes. The same people who dropped their handicapped children in places like that probably will sell you their daughters if you got the cash for whatever purpose. They say a society is judged by how they treat their really young, the elderly, and their animals. I guess since the mentally ill was not listed no one really cares. :) The way our economy is going we will most likely end up doing the same thing when things get really bad.
