That was a good video, but I would have really liked to have seen video of people with autism speaking for themselves. I saw the "I Am Autism" video afterwards and thought is was extremely heavy handed. I'm a little confused when I see a kid standing by himself and I'm told that this is such a big tragedy. To me the idea of never being alone is what's truly frightening.

Great video! I too checked out the original Autism Speaks video...it broke my heart. My feelings about this are summed up in one of the comments on it:

"Diversity is a GIFT to the human race. To cure an autistic person is to remove them from being. How will a prenatal test tell if a fetus is low or high functioning on the autistic spectrum? A marker for the autistic gene will show up invetro, so future wonderful, gifted people will never come to be. The cure will be a death sentence for human beings."

It wouldn't play for me. I've seen the newscast of the protesters carrying signs if that's what you meant. Autism Speaks talks about people with autism like they've been possessed by demons. I'd like to see some people talk about their autism like some here on WP have posted on YouTube, but in particular their reaction to Autism Speaks agenda. Autism Speaks plays a great game of boohooing about the tragedy of isolation but they are actually reinforcing that very thing. It's very condescending.

Most (82%) with Autistic Disorder (LFA/HFA, not AS) can speak adequately as adults. (Source: American Psychiatry Textbook and Professor Attwood.)

I don't know why people continue to purvey that "real" autistic people can't talk. "We've" been talking back since Kanner's days [and then some].

I didn't mind the Autism Speaks video though, as I see that carers and caring siblings are unsung heroes, not just the people who have to live with it themselves (where basic day to day stuff is an arduous struggle in the least).

I'm so often told by Autism Speaks supporters that if I can talk, that means that I have no problems. How they get this idea I have no clue. Yes, I can talk, but it Q means that I can get myself into one diplomatic nightmare after another, not that I have this amazing skill with words. I find it massively hard to advocate for myself most of the time, because although I know the words, I can't use them well enough to make a difference. And if 90-95% of communication betwen other people happens using non-verbal stuff, that means I'm also missing 90-95% of what's happening when two people meet. No wonder I am often so confused about communication and others are so confused about exactly what I mean or what I am thinking. Having some use of language is not necessarily better than having little use of it - it's just a different kind of problem.
