Rain Man & autism on the silver screen

I don't know about you but i feel the dominant portrayal of autism in the media is the 'savant'- Rain Man, Junebug, Mickey Blue Eyes etc. does anyone else feel that this is unfair? I am writing & producing a feature film and the main character has some Asperger's-like traits, it's not explicitly about autism but there's a subtext.

I know opinions are divided about this film but i think Mozart & The Whale is a good film- it's a bit inaccurate but it's a better portrayal than most, there's some bits that i can really relate to

Several months ago I saw this movie called "Adam" and it was all about this dude with Aspergers. It wasn't bad, but for the most part I felt that it was somewhat steriotypical. I mean, it tried to portray Aspergers well, and there were certain bits that really were relatable, but come on... geeky autistic science guy? How much more cliche does it get?

I know exactly how you feel! I failed HORRIBLY at science & math! the perception that everyone with Aspergers is a scientific/mathematical genius is kinda stupid! I've always been good at music & art but i'm not a savant. people with Aspergers (& other autistic spectrum conditions) tend to be very intelligent but savants are very rare!

Hollywood isn't about what things are really like, it's about what people want to see.
