Autism Speaks Question
Hey There,
I am a newbie and I have a question (my apologizes if this has been asked already). Why is everyone coming down so hard on the group Autism Speaks? I know they are an advocacy group and do some good work, but from what I have read people really hate them, so much as to consider not shopping at stores that support Autism Speaks. What did they do to incite this kind of response?
Take Care,
DudeFromVA
Yeah, I can see why you all hate them.
You would also think a group called Autism Speaks would be happy when autistic people spoke their minds. But when an autistic girl made a shirt that said "Autism Speaks can shut up" they sued her for copyright violation.
They also don't have a single person on the spectrum on their board. This wouldn't be an issue if they didn't claim to speak for autistic people (even an NT professional who has worked with autistic people their whole life can't really know what it is like to be autistic).

I'm never gonna dance again, Aspie feet have got no rhythm.
Last time I was on autism speaks I found a link to their "I am autism" video by (I forget the names... Alfonso something or something Alfonso & Billy Mann I think?) (its horrible & on youtube, along w/ some awesome parodies ). Also, they recently started making a bio bank where their asking for the brains of dead autistic kids/people... EWWW! (I'm not kidding about the biobank...)

Although it would be very interesting to see exactly what the differences in NT and autistic brains are, it's dangerous to have Autism Speaks (but not for me) involved in it. I really believe they really believe they are trying to do something good, I really do. But their approach, their goals, the way they do business, are all WRONG.
I would like to see what the physical differences are between NTs and various places on the spectrum. It would be very informative, in the same way that it's good to know the differences in the internal workings of males and females. I would like to see autistic researchers working on it, though.

Wow I just checked out the link. That's terrible approaching grieving families and asking for brain tissue to research cures.

Time is a great teacher, but unfortunately it kills all its pupils ...
We get the same in the UK. You get a powerful group of business interests. They see a fast buck in a particular range of pharmacological products . They find a political mouthpiece .The mouthpiece recruits some well meaning medical practitioners who can advance their careers. They play on the negative experiences of families and relatives and convert them into supporters for the new regime . They put pressure on health care delivery systems. Get a Prof. of something or other ,write a 400 page beautifully presented piece of 399 pages-empty study. They get all media connected and friendly, run a few scare stories and my Aspi Parent Hell . The treatment regime gets up and running.
Simple if you know how. Big bucks.
Pharmacology has an interesting social side effect when the patient is no longer in control. It often goes hand in hand with the ideologies behind reducing human life to a less then "scared" organism. The first step is abortion and voluntary euthanasia ( The good death) If you get an "elected" psychopath who wants to walk further down this road history tells us we get:
First a “Law for the Prevention of Progeny with Hereditary Diseases.”
Followed six short years later by something like "Aktion T 4,"
I ain't joking when it comes to this sort of thing, it is seriously nasty stuff. This is why human life is to be regarded with respect and is sacred, either in a religious, or broader atheistic framework .
If Aspies ran this planet we would have very nice colorful slides in between floors of shopping centers and ball pits so Downs Syndrome and LFA's and other kids could enjoy their days out better. We also could go and see our governments and put support structures in place for social, economic and occupational support and inclusion.
"Stupid Aspis! "--Why !- the technology/ bureauracy exists, it the the thinking that applies it that is currently wrong and sick ,and since the day I was born I have inherently recognized this to be so.
Also - One group of humans defines another as different and sends them a message they
are no longer required in the gene pool. Oops bit of a social gaffe there. The ones they don't want in the gene pool have a problem with sometimes not being able to measure the effects of their communication on their audience. I do not get insulted easily because I don't fully understand it. I can think of nothing more insulting than to be confronted with being called a bag of bad genes by a bunch of eugenic supremicists. They are probably a group of compensating socially inadequate NTs anyway projecting on us.
If this is an act of ignorance then it is forgivable. If it is not an act of ignorance then I personally take it as a declaration of open hostility.
Furthermore I send them the response of the Spartans to the Athenians - " If."
Evolution is a level playing field.
BioBanks?! I am actually sickened by that. How in God's name could they even think that was a good idea. That is pure and simple barbaraic (sp) and evil. To ask grieving families for something like that is pure evil. That...wow.
I will definitely read the sites linked, but that one upset me the most. Yeah, now I hate them...and I am a newbie.
Folks, this is industry standard. Every medical student disassembles a body.
Cancer research has long been based on tissue banks.
It has become fairly standard to harvest reusable parts.
Brain morphology as related to DNA as related to outcomes is a very new field, and very complex.
The article does say Harvard runs the program. It is not just autism, besides conditions that produce different brainforms, we are just coming to an understanding that all brains are not alike.
A recent study showed that East Asians and Europeans process math in different ways, Asians use the visual center, Europeans the verbal. Some wonder if it might be from the use of the abaccus, a visual teaching form, where Europe uses words. We may be the same, and the result only teaching methods. There are also differances in the concept of self, Europe stands alone, Asia includes mother, line, which might be cultural, or might be a differance of wiring.
While there is some interest in outstanding forms, Autism, there is no base line. It takes a life history, DNA, and a brain to compare. While a random study of brains gives an overview, and shows results like FAS, mothers to be who drink, most is an unknown.
That children become organ and tissue donars is a lot rarer than the older people who donate their bodies. Most die after 55, and most of their organs are not transplant material.
If you are eight and need a new heart, liver, you have a big problem finding one that matches, and in your size. Besides organs and tissue, the bodies of children are much harder to come by for study.
There are some real big questions in normal development till three, then regression. It does point to some cause, and not vaccines. There has been much speculation, all has been checked, with no results. The ideal study would compare the brains of normal development with the autistic variation at the age of three.
Thanks to this very type of medical study, not many people die at three. Very few of them become available for organ donation and tissue study.
Autism Speaks seems to have hired a PhD to run thier program, so they can call him Doctor.
They are a fund raising group, not personally up on Science, but have raised a lot of money that no matter what they infer by Autism Speaks Research, they had nothing to do with what the study would be about, other than Autism related donations. Studies are planned by peer reviewed science that will best advance a broad field of study.
I did think well of the Stem Cell line, but standard materials are only part of the problem.
Brains do seem to take another development path at three. If it was from birth, I would hold other views, but if there is something there, it may be a cure, or at least a moderation.
Aspies remind me of teens, old teens that do not grow out of it. Maybe in another twenty years, maturing at 42.
LFA may have great mental abilities, but lack the means of connecting. They are the focus, the great expense of Autism, and just perhaps, something could cause them to develop into annoying Aspies.
As for the death camps that keep getting mentioned, Autism Speaks funded peer reviewed science shows twenty two sites on DNA, up from thirteen a year ago. There will be no selective abortion.
The DNA study did show some broad traits, shared by all autistics, LFA, Aspies, and Broader Autism Phenotype. 10% of the population, plus a lot more with the recessive parts.
Aspies seem to not breed LFA, the parents seem all NT, yet we have Autism. The most I have heard is it runs in families, but they do not get worse over generations.
There is something about the DNA, but it does not seem to be the direct cause. Perhaps people with this DNA are subject to a minor virus that brings change. That could explain the range of ASDs, another mystery, for most things are plain cause and effect. We know the effects are broad, some even useful. Like Small Pox, that killed many, scared many, was mild in some, and others were just immune carriers.
Medical Science is a messy business, nature still has them outgunned. They have won some battles, eradicated Small Pox, Polio, and have earned some street cred.
If Autism Speaks was only NT, that group think and singleminded focus. But Alas, they are the worst, Marketing and Advertising, and have situational ethics. They have defined a demographic that gives them money, and that is all they focus on.
They can promote tissue donation, and they do have a broad base. But, as the article stated, that happens through the Medical Examiner, and is forwarded to Harvard.
Parents know even less, and first they seek knowledge and hope at Autism Speaks, after that, Wrong Planet becomes Plan "B".
If I thought there could be a vaccine that would lessen the effects of a Virus and turn Aspies into Geeks, I would be in favor of it, and if it turned those who would react the most, LFA, into Aspies, I would tell them they are annoying. Everyone alive would be beyond treatment, for that would become universal in the first year of life.
It would have a huge market, even those who's DNA did not fit the profile would want it.
What I have noticed is not even Autism can change the personalities here. They are almost as broad as the world, but more focused on Science, Technology, Mechanics, Arts, Education, and if cured, they would still be, but without the closet full of Lego.
Those alive now are hopeless, more excess Neurons than you could ever drink to death.
I do see that this Virus strikes the INTJ, INTP, some ENTP-J, and it seems a genetically coded suceptable personality with varying reactions to our Goa'ould masters. No one can kill them, but they can be reduced to our slaves.
So I fully support Autism Speaks in the search for a cure, for if they fail, the Goa'ould will take their revenge on them.
But most people (I am one of those) and their families don't want to see a cure for Autism. They would like to see a reduction in symptoms of Autism, but most are happy the way they are, happy with their differences. Medical science, perferably psychology and psychiatry, learned only about 40 years ago you can't cure mental illnesses and disabilities, you can only make the symptoms of them less. So what Autism Speaks is doing is horrifying and pointless.
I think we should ask those and the families of those with Autism and Aspergers, if there was a cure for Autism and Aspergers, would you take it or would you give it to your kids? How many of us really want to be "cured"? Or are we happy with the way we are? I think that should be the bigger question, not "find a cure, damn the torpedos".
