I've recently recieved a few emails from college about raising money for autism :D. My only issue is the money goes to autism speaks... much of what I have read about them & seen they're media representations of autism REALLY bothers me... Even though I am all for supporting autism awareness & such I'm thinking about ignoring them, any thoughts on this?

p.s. sorry if this is in the wrong forum

Why ignore it when you can bring it to their attention that autism speaks is rather bad?

Well, I'm not sure how to do that?

Write a letter outlining the facts, in particular call attention to any "hate speech" elements of "Autism Speaks" campaigns, and the fact that the college supporting this organization prevents you from feeling safe, valued as an equal, and free from discrimination, with respect to your enrollment at the college and your on-campus activities and participation.

Ask the college why it would support a group that advocates that your innate traits destroy families and cause divorce despite the fact that research based evidence demonstrates that this is simply untrue. Ask how you can feel safe and equal while attending a college that supports slander against people like you and that vilifies your traits by making hateful and counter-factual claims about the destructive qualities of your innate and inalienable traits and characteristics. Ask why your college should fund hate campaigns against people like you.

You might also want to ask if the college has considered how much of the money they raise will be spent on actual resources that improve the lives of Autistic people, how much will be spent funding research intended to facilitate the genocide of people like you, how much will be spent funding fear-mongering hate campaigns that rely entirely on denigrating and vilifying the traits of people like you, and how much is spent on the salaries of top executives in the organization, and ask why the college thinks this is an acceptable use of monies that it donates.

Best of luck if you choose to act.

If you don't get why I'm disgusted I'll tell you when I know its confusing... otherwise I'll assume those who read it get it...

I'd totally write them a letter if I were you. Haven't gotten any e-mails like that from my college or anything like that, but yeah it's really distressing that people just go, "Oh, they want to defeat autism!" and start throwing money at them without bothering to think about whether autism is a "disease" that needs to be eliminated.

I outlined a letter, but I'm going to take my time on it (goal is to have it done by April :D) but I'm bad at writing :( I'm also siting some stuff I found online as examples :). Would siting WP as an autism site be illegal?

This video has been asked to be distributed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jLOCYubV ... r_embedded

It might be a good idea to watch it and see how you can fit it into your letter. And when it comes to citing wrongplanet, URLs are public domain; you can send them to whoever you chose and cite them whenever it's appropriate to do so. I would definitely cite this website, it's one of the few places you can here it from our perspective.(which seems to be really consistent, otherwise I wouldn't use the word "our")
