The (now) famous study that drove and millions of parents to avoid vaccines and also linked bowel syndrome to autism is going to be retracted:

UK medical journal retracts flawed vaccine study

Published: Today(feb 2, 2010)

LONDON (AP) - A major British medical journal on Tuesday retracted a flawed study linking the measles, mumps and rubella vaccine to autism and bowel disease.

The retraction by The Lancet comes a day after a competing medical journal, BMJ, issued an embargoed commentary calling for The Lancet to formally retract the study. The commentary was to have been published on Wednesday.

The BMJ commentary said once the study by British surgeon and medical researcher Andrew Wakefield and his colleagues appeared in 1998 in The Lancet, "the arguments were considered by many to be proven and the ghastly social drama of the demon vaccine took on a life of its own."

Since the controversial paper was published, British parents abandoned the vaccine in droves, leading to a resurgence of measles. Subsequent studies have found no proof that the vaccine is connected to autism, though some parents are still wary of the shot.

In Britain, vaccination rates for measles have never recovered and there are outbreaks of the disease every year.

Ten of Wakefield's 13 co-authors renounced the study's conclusions several years ago and The Lancet has previously said it should never have published the research.

"We fully retract this paper from the published record," Lancet editors said in a statement Tuesday.

Last week, Britain's General Medical Council ruled that Wakefield had shown a "callous disregard" for the children used in his study and acted unethically. Wakefield and the two colleagues who have not renounced the study face being stripped of their right to practice medicine in Britain.

For the study, Wakefield took blood samples from children at his son's birthday party, paying them 5 pounds each ($8) for their contributions and later joking about the incident.
I wonder what Jenny McCarthy has to say on the subject

whoever was/is stupid enough to believe that vaccinations cause autism needs a sound beating. What amazes me is that it took them this long to finally retract the study.

I don't know whether to be pleased that this horse-dooky theory has finally been disproved, or annoyed because it took so fricking long.

What's worse is that the anti-vaccine and big placebo morons will fill their sites with conspiracy theories about how big pharma moved their strings to force this ruling.

We must not forget about Alex Jones and Jenny McCarthy. Of course they continue to believe its all a conspiracy theory set by the pharma and government.

My mom was interviewed on TV today, and on one of the TV broadcasts, they showed a photo of me.

Unfortunately, it is not shown on the video, but the interview with my mom was. It was in regard to the retracted autism/vaccine study.

I'm sure that Jenny McCarthy and others who believed the fake study will just say that it's Big Pharma orchestrating a "cover up."

Autism Speaks are really just part of a horrifying large trend towards returning to the dark age.

Yes. I think that is exactly what will happen unfortunately. They will use the fact that it took this long to retract as evidence that it is actually true and this retraction is actually a coverup. The false data is out there now and no retraction can pull it out of peoples' minds, or web sites or published books. This will be percieved as a massive Big Pharma conspiracy.

I don't agree with your fix. Although I do agree that Autism Speaks may call it a conspiracy, they are hardly the only ones who will say that. It is likely that most people who really poured their belief into this will think it is a conspiracy. The only people who won't call it a conspiracy are the ones who doubted the data in the first place and the ones who were undecided.

Yep, here it is: http://www.ageofautism.com/2010/02/a-st ... monke.html

Not only that but now ape studies are "proving" that vaccines cause autism too. Ugh.
