They're more likely to comply if we can give them another autism related charity to donate to. So, what ones are actually good to us?

eah but they arent likly to collect donations for a website.

I would LOVE them to replace it with collecting donations for an Autism Service dog Foundation. This will go right to helping people with autism and thier families by allowing these foundations to provide more service animals for those on the spectrum. All the money will go directly to the care, training and feeding of these very valuable dogs. both these places seem to be good

I am actually aplying with them for my next dog! They ACTUALLY HAVE German Shepherds

Assistance dogs for autism

Or this one is really good too

Servicedogsand autism

I choose these because they are providing them to families as cheap as they canto the families who need them. Unfortunatly these dogs do cost ALOT to train and maintane through thier trainning and there is specail breeding as well that goes into these dogs.

Nim is my autism service dog I have PDD-NOS autism. Nim's jobs focus on safty and socailization. Nim is one of the few that can be pet if you ask first though I don't have a patch telling people they can pet her. I perfer they ask me and there are days I dont want anyone touching her so I don't coulenteer the you can pet her just ask me information. I had those patches before and people would grab at her with out asking more then ussualy so I had tthem removed. This doesn't count as a task but I am alot more socail when I have her and I have actualy made friends because of her.

Nim is also trained that if I am having a melt down to crawl ont to my lap and lean into me to provide deep pressure which helps calms me. Her prescence also seem to reduce my meltdowns a great deal as well

I also have trouble witth general safty when it comes to streets. All to often I will see an object of my specail intrest and go right to it. The probleam is when this happens I don't seem to proccess the streets in between me and it. Nim is trained to step infront of me and stop me. I also do this when my mind is distracted or there re to manny people. IDoes anyone else have this probleam?

Fire alarms are another issue for me. I have 3 reactions to them

reaction one is to jump and cover my ears as the sound of the alarm tends to really hurt. This also causes me to not so much be disoriented as forget/ take a few minutes to regroup my thoughts and rember the proper responce short of hidding and trying to block out the sound. Nim is trained to nudge me and make sure I get out. She will crawl in my lap only after we have gotten outside.
2 is how most people react only again I am cluching my ears trying to reduce sound and pain.
3. If I am really into something like indulging my specail intrest I tend to block out the rest of the world and everything processes very slowly or I will block it out. Nim's touch and pawing me is enough to get my attention as I will respond to it. She will paw at me to get my attention and we will get out. again once I stop blocking out the sound i will need to block my ears.

Nim is also trained to find me if she is with Pat and I wander off (not very common for me but we have that just incase) This is most likly to happen in crowds

Also Nim just provides general safty. there are not that manny people who are going to try and cause me trouble when I have a 75lbs German Shepherd dog with me.
those are all tasks above. for children they are also trained for safry to keep kids from running into the street alert parents to a child trying to sneak out or getting into something dangerous to track a child who has warndered off or bolted. Some place train them to redirect stimming to petting the dog.

I choose these because they are providing them to families as cheap as they canto the families who need them. Unfortunatly these dogs do cost ALOT to train and maintane through thier trainning and there is specail breeding as well that goes into these dogs.

Ooh, there was a topic on that just a few days ago... ASDogGeek started one about how people react to her service dog, and we talked about it. It can't be more than a few pages down the list.

Edit--
Aha!

Do you happen to know of a place that trains dogs for adults with Asperger's?

Depending on what you needed the dog to do, you might get by with really good basic obedience training. An emotional support animal or psychiatric service dog can often work with just the manners to be quiet and calm in public. (ESAs don't get to go into places where service dogs, but not pets, are allowed; so they really only need regular training. The difference is that you're allowed to take them with you into no-pets housing, provided you pay for any damage. Psychiatric service dogs need more strict training because they can be taken anywhere a service dog can go; so they need to be very well-mannered.) I know that Petsmart offers obedience classes; I've been told they're rather good, and there are advanced classes available beyond basic puppy training. If you want to do it yourself, that would be an idea.

I know of a place in my area that trains shelter dogs as autism service dogs. They're called Paws 4 Ability, or something of that sort (I'm not sure whether it's a for or a 4, and it could be "4 Paws" instead of just "Paws"). The dogs are generally taught to help kids, but I bet they could train one for an adult.

Thanks for that, I printed it so I won't forget.

But I didn't mean to derail the topic!

Should we petition Toys R Us to stop collecting for AutismSpeaks?

yeah. i used to be really bad with streets, getting yelled at a lot. my ability to focus had to adapt for the usage of a car. usually i just zone out or get distracted. driving a car was a whole 'nother deal, haha.

i want to petition toys-r-us! there is one right near me!

There's a similar thing here, just not aimed at Toys R Us: http://www.autism-hub.co.uk/autism-spea ... /index.php

WrongPlanet is not a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, which is requisite for many companies who are either making a donation to or taking donations for another group. Autism Speaks IS a 501(c)3 which opens many more options for them in terms of funding and tax status.

Would WP like to be a 501(c)3 ? WP saved my sanity and my life. Perhaps I'm not the only one. All the doctors in all those years didn't help me like WP did.
