I am black and I have had an encounter with the police before. This was for me having a meltdown in the middle of an open field by a grocery store. i was really upset that day. I saw a car over in the parking lot and I guessed that was the person who called the police. The police checked me for weapons, but didn't do anything after that. They told me they cared about me, but it was bs, they just saw me as a threat. If i didn't calm down, I had the feeling I was going to be tased, and that would not have been good. Now I know I'm a black man so I have to not have meltdowns like that. I can't get away with what a white aspie or female aspie may be able to get away with because I'm black. and when the police sees a black man, they don't think aspergers or anything else, they think threat. Last saturday I went to an asperger/police meeting in PHX and the police was telling us how they are training cops for these types of incidents to help preserve life. I kept my mouth shut, because I know even a police trained for this type of incident wont even care because I'm black. I don't like cops because I know they don't like me. I may sound small minded, but I've been open minded about stuff like this long enough. I did community service with the police once (it was for school, not in trouble) and they said so many racist jokes about arabs, Obama and so on. I don't like police.

I've had some interesting encounters with the police as well but nothing that led to detention. I wish I could say that race and ethnicity were not a motivator here but it is obvious that is not true in this situation.

What is even more shocking is that this young man is locked away from his family, probably having a long overdrawn meltdown in a strange and unfamiliar place. It is mind boggling.

It is one persons word against another. It is not logical that an autistic young man attacked a police officer "for no reason" as stated in the police report. the story he told his mother is logical, so I believe the police officer is lying.
He told his mom that he tried to walk away from the cop because of the frustration of being accused and searched for no reason. He tried walk away because he did nothing wrong. When he turned his back the cop grabbed him and tried to force him to accept his "authority" to ask more questions. At that point he was probably frustrated and tried to pull away from the officer. At that point the officer became even more aggressive and tried to subdue the young man by using pepper spray. The young man kicked and grabbed the pepper spray in self defense. Then he ran off like he wanted to do to begin with.
This is definitely a story of a policeman being a bully to someone who did not grovel to their authority. The police locked him up in solitary confinement, without bail, for 11 days, then put him in a mental institution 90 miles from home, even though his mother told them he was autistic. Assault on individuals, for not being humble enough to satisfy a police officers ego, is a chronic problem that gets worse every year. ("Don't Taze me bro" as an example)
I think his mother should sue the city for violating his civil rights, charge the policeman for aggravated assault, and sue the mental institution for false imprisonment.

Violation of Unreasonable search and seizure. The officer had no right to do what he did and should be tried. Yet he will escape due to "being" law enforcement. This shows how America is a police state.

It doesn't boil down to a racial issue but rather a rule of law issue. There is one set of rules for citizens and another set for any agent or policy maker for the various governments. Courts routinely take the word of a government person over that of the citizens he or she supposedly serves. This in itself is wrong. Race is a good tool government people of all types use to keep citizens divided. What happened to this man is plainly wrong, and it will continue to happen regardless of the wishes of we the people unless we the people start taking direct action. I have suggested on many forum that we the people create a bureaucrat registry that operates in much the same way as the various sex offender registries. Information entered into the bureaucrat registry needs to come from citizens. The governments' problem is the fact that they have lost their FEAR of the people. When the government fears the people, liberty abounds. When the people fear the government, tyranny abounds.

Jeez, this is awful. :\ I really hope that he and his family can find an excellent legal team to get him off the hook, and then sue the pants off the police department and/or the city (to say nothing of the person who reported him for being "suspicious" for sitting outside a library) for how they've handled this.

If anyone is interested, you can find more information (as well as a petition and a place to donate) at http://avoiceforneli.com/. Also, I have created a Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/pages/Justice-f ... 975?ref=ts

I've also spoken briefly with this individuals' mother and informed her of my support. The police have shown time and time again that they do not have the proper training when it comes to dealing with neurodiversity. If you have any connections to any media outlets I encourage you to inform them of what has happened.

Some idiot reported him as suspicious just because he was black. I bet if he were white, he be left alone.

When encountering police, I always know to cooperate and let them bug me so they let me go. If I don't cooperate and I try and walk away or refuse to answer, I cause more trouble for myself because they may think I'm a criminal because only an innocent person would let them search them and stuff because they want to get it over with and move on and they want to show them they are innocent and have nothing to hide.

But luckily I don't encounter police.

I was alerted to this discussion by a member here. Thanks for your support. I've only told a part of Neli's story. I'm waiting on the national news to pick this up before I tell ALL OF IT. It doesn't look like that's going to happen anytime soon because I've contacted several major news networks and have received no responses. I give it until Monday. If no one will talk to me, then I have to continue on this crusade and ALL of Neli's story will be told. Again thanks for your support.

Does sound like a case of officer Cartman having a tantrum on the guy for failure to grovel to his "authoritay."

So, he gets profiled, assaulted, locked up on bogus charges, likely manhandled, kept from home, prevented from seeing anyone, and is now overloaded to the point of being catatonic, and they're probably 'treating' that by pumping him full of drugs (which maybe could be used later to show he's "so crazy" and "unstable" that he "had to be" "medicated").

What a f****** infuriating mess.

Here's that petition site again that someone up-thread mentioned:

You should make a post to the Drudgereport as well. This is a national independent news aggregator. http://www.drudgereport.com

It's truly scary how quickly basic constitutional rights end near a school zone; Neli was denied peaceful assembly, freedom from unreasonable search and seizure, equal protection under the law, and due process and speedy trial.

My heart goes out to you and your son. This is the type of situation we all fear for our kids, that a complete misunderstanding can lead to them doing something the law deems a crime, when there was no criminal intent ... Add the race factor, which I do not have to deal with, but does sound like was a key factor, and I really feel for you. Let me know if there is anything I or the other parents here can do.
