Same thing we do every night, Pinky,
Try to take over the world..."

They're, they're Pinky and the Brain.
Brain, Brain, Brain, Brain"

No, Obey the Brain!"

Some time ago, the Dino De Laurentis of the Autism world, Alex Plank wrote an article entitled "Wrong Planet Acquires Autism Speaks" as a Shiny Happy April Fool's prank. It was posted on his WrongPlanet.net website, whose discussion forum is the busiest Autism site on teh Intawebs.

“Wrong Planet has acquired autism organization Autism Speaks for $80 million dollars. The deal was completed early tuesday morning and marks a turning point in the campaign by autistics who feel that their needs were not represented by an organization that is run without any input from people with Autism”

Little over a year and a half later, it seems the tables have been turned, and the once doughty campaigner for the rights of Preppies with social anxiety disorders and rich parents, is now gripped firmly by the gaping maw of Autism Speaks' pr guru, Marc Sirkin.

WrongPlanet should of joined forces with the Autism Self Advocacy Network (ASAN) instead...

You want a list of "good" autism repesentatives, cause I've got A LOT MORE... the stuff from autism speaks pissed me off last jan-feb to the point where I did A LOT of research... heck I did a powerpoint project on autism self-advocacy in german in high school  (Though now I can't speak german for crap ) Also have an english copy...

p.s. I won't post my powerpoints here but I've got no problem giving the "good reps" list out

I'm not going to lose sleep over it. I may hate Autism Speaks, but I'm also thankful, that WrongPlanet has lasted, as long as it has.

I don't think they're too bad. They're mainly trying to speak for 'real' autism (as the public see it) not aspergers, and having seen people with more severe difficulties, and the stress that both they and their families are under, I would be completely for giving them help and researching to understand it and treat the symptoms/cause.

I don't think Autism Speaks is the huge genocidal conspiracy to wipe out people with aspergers that seems to keep cropping up here. Perhaps they are campaigning to give people to option of selecting against autistic genes, but nobody has to take them up on that offer even if it does become a reality.

I remember watching the video they made interviewing the parents; it was a bit sacharine, and I agree with everybody else who was disgusted when the mother said she'd thought about killing herself and her child (with the child on her lap) but the statistics show that it is not a lone view and people like this do need help before they do burn out and harm their child. I hope they stop making ads like that though, because it almost suggests that it's ok to think stuff like that. Perhaps with input from people who actually have autism/aspergers, they will.

My mom is the OT at a school for moderate-severely autistic kids & I'm actually part time over the summer. I definitely agree that the ones who are more severely affected need A LOT of help. If they get it early enough though, with luck they're progress can shock you. But for those who have severe behavior & physical symptoms and are teens and above (possibly you could even say in many cases ages 11/12 and up) are going to need long-term care and supports. Focus needs to be put on helping these people/kids develop coping strategies and arranging different types of work & group home arrangements b/c once the parents are gone and the kids age out of the system they're royally screwed as of the way things are now.

Pinky and the Brain is great. Autism Speaks isn't.

Autism Speaks does not speak, for me. In fact, it reeks of genocide.
