Take sickle cell anemia for example. It might be considered a genetic disorder people would be best without, but at the same time it gives you a much higher resistance against malaria.

sickle cell is protective in the haploid state; in the diploid state, it cause extreme pain and/or death with exertion.

Perfection is an idea divorced from reality. The very idea of perfection is flawed. Can any two humans agree on what perfection is? How then 6 billion?

You know, I'm actually writing a sci-fi novel about the psychological effects of genetic engineering on humans. Sometimes, I've had this irrational fear that, because of the incredible physical and mental power given to them, these super-people would become virtual psychopaths that show no pity, remorse, pain or fear (Thank you, Kyle Reese, for letting me steal one of your lines!) That may be true in some cases, but that doesn't mean we're going to have a bunch of Terminators roaming around. I asked by science teacher about this, and she said that instead of killer Arnolds, we'd have a bunch of superhuman Shinji Ikaris.
