Psychology Today: Autism and Teens (Something related to a movie)

There was a statistic somewhere in this article that I'm not sure is true or not. Anyway, opinions on this article (I didn't think much of it)

I think it is very sad and yet respectful.

Why do so many movies that feature characters with autism portray the autistic person as ret*d?

I think amounting the person to an R word in the video because you are offended by the person compared to yourself or others may be derogatory.

They didn't portray her as ret*d. They portrayed her as low functioning. It's not the same thing. You should not assume that every non-verbal or semi-verbal person with autism who has problems with the functions of daily life is ret*d. Although for the record, some actually are ret*d. And they are no less movie-worthy than you.

yes...but it would be nice if 'they' would portray a high functioning aspie for once. I guess that doesn't make for good drama. They do have Big Bang but he isn't represented as Aspie to unfamiliar
NT viewers and he is there for laughs, not a better understanding

That's sort of what I meant to say. I didn't watch the clip of the movie posted in this topic, nor were my comments about that movie specifically. However, it seems like many of the movies that show what it's like to be on the spectrum place autism in a negative light. Either that, or we're all mathematical savants.

For once I'd like to see a movie where the autistic person isn't low-functioning, or a savant, or a person who is well-known because they're a professor at a university or creator of machines to help animals. I don't think these portrayals of ASD's truly reflect being on a spectrum. And these movies don't really show comorbidities that can occur along with ASD's.

Try the movie Adam, about a man with Aspergers and his struggles with romantic relationship, or Snowcake about a woman with HFA (or Aspergers, not specified) who is a mother.
