i think a core problem with our special ed system is that it creates gangs. the reason for this is that students are put into a group that they have something in common with. then, these kids have to defend each other against bullies. they are kept apart from the rest of the school so it creates a separation and a feeling of them and us. i have seen a lot of violence and drugs because of this. even a few named gangs.

We have the same problem in Canada too. I even blame some of my childhood depression on it. I spent years in grade school in a little group at the back of the class and I was the only girl. I didn't get to sit next to my friends and I was bullied the entire time.

I'd say were pretty even. Between the school system and the mental health system here, and in the US my other Aspie friends have also had nightmarish times. I had a friend in Alaska who had a childhood autism DX that no one did anything about and when he started having normal "aspie" puberty out bursts some ret*d psychiatrist DXed him Schizo and drugged the crap out of him. When we met on some Schizo boards I asked him if he had an Aspie DX. He said yes but knew nothing about his symptoms or what it was. So he took his original Aspie DX to be reviewed by a highly trained professional and they almost instantly took him off all the schizo meds and began providing him with social services that I hear have greatly improved his ability to function. His neurologist told him he saved himself from unnecessary damage caused by the drugs he was on. In my case I couldn't make sense of the severity of my learning disabilities I didn't know that they had played a huge role in my severe depression. When I first suspected AS I went to my local mental health center and asked them if they had anyone or any programs that could help me. They said no. I had to get help form a charity organization to even get my DX. So I went back to "Trellis" my local mental health center and I said hey if Autism is so co-morbid with mental illness then why don't you have services that incorporate those special needs. They told me that pretty much none of the psychiatrists and most of the staff had NO experience with ASDs so they can't really accommodate us, help us, or DX us, but they can DX ADHD or anything else just as long as your willing to go on meds.

Maybe this is why most of our kids are mainstreamed or home schooled.

I don't think an institutional / separation model was ever very wise, it just allowed people to ignore what they didn't want to learn to understand.

most of what i was talking about was my experience of classes in public school. but i can imagine institutions are far worse.

i personaly would have to say institutions are the lesser of the 2 evils.i spent a very little amount of time in public school and i went to a fancy prep school that kicked me out after three months.i was happiest at the group homes\homes for boys etc....like i said the juvinile delinquents mostly left us alone

I actually cut school alot just because of the fact that their answer to the problem was to stick me in a small class. It wasn't exactly Special education, the true special education was in the basement. But they had a whole section of one of the floors for smaller classrooms, it was still very demeaning.

My experience with special ed was very bad. It was filled with gangs and I was bullied really bad. The teacher treat us like lost causes and didn't teach at all. One teacher told the class that everyone is going to be on welfare for the rest of their lives. All they did was sit behind the desk and hand out paper work and spend most of their time yelling at the trouble makers. I was taught way below the grade level and was bored to death. I begged them to please mainstream me because I felt I was being held down and live in a nightmare. I am taking college classes and they are much better, even though I have to work extra hard.

An autistic special education class should be so great that even neurotypicals would want to get in.

When I was in school my Mother got me out of the public school and sent me to a hippie school that claimed it was a child centered school which is like the definition of autism which is self centered.
