We have the same problem in Canada too. I even blame some of my childhood depression on it. I spent years in grade school in a little group at the back of the class and I was the only girl. I didn't get to sit next to my friends and I was bullied the entire time.
i have heard canada is even worse than america on handling asd's.
I'd say were pretty even. Between the school system and the mental health system here, and in the US my other Aspie friends have also had nightmarish times. I had a friend in Alaska who had a childhood autism DX that no one did anything about and when he started having normal "aspie" puberty out bursts some ret*d psychiatrist DXed him Schizo and drugged the crap out of him. When we met on some Schizo boards I asked him if he had an Aspie DX. He said yes but knew nothing about his symptoms or what it was. So he took his original Aspie DX to be reviewed by a highly trained professional and they almost instantly took him off all the schizo meds and began providing him with social services that I hear have greatly improved his ability to function. His neurologist told him he saved himself from unnecessary damage caused by the drugs he was on. In my case I couldn't make sense of the severity of my learning disabilities I didn't know that they had played a huge role in my severe depression. When I first suspected AS I went to my local mental health center and asked them if they had anyone or any programs that could help me. They said no. I had to get help form a charity organization to even get my DX. So I went back to "Trellis" my local mental health center and I said hey if Autism is so co-morbid with mental illness then why don't you have services that incorporate those special needs. They told me that pretty much none of the psychiatrists and most of the staff had NO experience with ASDs so they can't really accommodate us, help us, or DX us, but they can DX ADHD or anything else just as long as your willing to go on meds.
