So I was watching autism videos. I found this video on adult autism

same thing as always, a bit offending. Delivering information in a way that can give people a negative view jadadadada.

I sense the fear campaign on one hand

on the other hand I view it as informational.

They show two examples and try to apply it to us all.

Nothing new. It's just another show about stereotypical Autism. No surprise. Makes for good TV and ratings I suppose.

Will they ever learn to show people other parts of the spectrum?

What I see as a problem is that both of them are probably considered to have High Functioning Autism, because they can do a lot for themselves. By comparison to most of us though, I would say they're pretty severe.

It's going to take a long time to stamp out the stereotypes.

They represented a moderate functioning/less severe adult on the spectrum... Now everyone is going to think that way.

It's a very realistic depiction of people on the lower end of the spectrum who will face a real problem in the future when their parents/caregivers are gone. I don't see it as fear mongering, but looking at a growing problem. These are not the type of Autistic people who post to Wrong Planet. Those of us here are more high functioning, and more cognitive of the world.

The Spectrum is wide…

Of course in the video they were trying to emphasis a point so it makes sense to use the lower functioning end of the spectrum. But the thing is, I feel in putting more wholistic approaches to representing autism, they should have both lower functioning and higher functioning individuals in the segment. But then it seems with the news/media features, they seemed to be representing aspergers as well these days.

the video was ok. i mean i don't think it was particurally hateful. it was a little simplistic. at least they weren't talking about mercy killing autistic people.

That would go against their plans of invoking fear so that people will say yes to prenatal screening and abort.

I understand that I-- and a lot of us here-- am very high-functioning.

But I get SO SICK of having to explain to people that I am not this way, that my father was not this way, that my son will not be this way...

I think about this time last year through this past summer-- therapists who were so determined that I must be this way that they fed me drugs until I began to become quite low-functioning indeed...

I get ANGRY.

genetics.

That wont tell you. If genetics was predictable all kids would pop out the same.

That video managed to package all of my own insecurities about my future into just under 17 minutes. Some of the things those parents said, I've talked to my mother about.

The lack of services for autistic adults is a serious problem. I don't understand what the problem is with this video?
