So I was watching the news, cause there was a thunderstorm and the thunder freaks me out [too loud and sudden]. Apparently they've ammended the numbers again, and now it's 1:88 people being diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum. I'm very grateful that the interview-ee explained that this statistic includes higher-functioning individuals, and dissented to calling autism a disease or talking about a "cure." [Cough...prenatal test...cough] He did say to diagnose early if possible, which is understandable. [My little brother, for example, wasn't diagnosed until four when he still couldn't talk...or didn't, I'm starting to wonder about that kid. He only talks echolalically now. :( ]

My mother believes this is because--and this is a little racist--they started diagnosing more minorities [blacks, hispanics, etc.] with autism instead of mental retardation. The Psych said it was because "we're better at finding the symptoms."

Thoughts?

....good. Chinese autistics used to be tossed out as babies or locked up in the loony bin, I heard. But here, I wish they could sort of change the stereotype for autism.

You know what's weird about that? A lot of Asian [Japanese/Korean, don't know as much about China] mannerisms seem like things high-functioning autistics do [or exclude from their mannerisms] normally. Making eye contact is rude, keep your arms still [crossed] when you talk to people, don't touch people on the head, etc...

That's still pretty terrible. I think they used to do that here, in Europe, in Africa, and...everywhere. :( Not happy days, the past...

Maybe 10 years from now the stats will rise to 1/20 :D and in 20? everyone will be Aspies and being Aspie will no longer be considered abnormal in society.
