Anyone else ever wonder if GMO (genetically modified organism) infested food has anything to do with the rise in autism? (maybe even cancer?) I've been seriously thinking about it... They like to blame vaccinations or neglect.. But when I look at dates I notice they started genetically modify crops about the same time autism started to rise. You can't eat ANYthing corn or soy(unless 100% organic) without it being GMO infused, worst offender being childrens cereals.. Makes you wonder doesnt it?! I wish they could force companies that use GMO crops in their product to label it so. But of course they are fighting it tooth and nail, they don't want the public to know about the GMO crap in their favorite products...

Or maybe people just started to diagnose it more and the percentage of people with autism hasn't been going up

That's what someone on facebook said, even sent me a link. http://healthland.time.com/2012/03/29/autism-rises-more-u-s-children-than-ever-have-autism-is-the-increase-real/

I totally agree it's "easier" to diagnose but I highly doubt thats the reason for the increase.
I know parents who refuse to get their child diagnosed(They seem not to want the label plastered on thier kid), I know adults who refuse to get diagnose(Usually already well off and don't need it in their record).
Kids are just able to get diagnosed earlier for the most part.

But It still seems like too much of a coincidence for it to be ruled out.
They used to think vaccinations were a cause.. why not GMO?
I wouldn't mind shifting blame to them. Hate GMO

Just a random theory plaguing my mind.

The way that autism is diagnosed is made for diagnosing children, there is not a true test made for adults, just a modified version of the test for kids. It is harder to diagnose adults. For example, it is common for people that have autism to have had a speech issue when they were younger, as an adult they probably are not showing signs of it because of speech class.

Are you saying it is because the mom is eating the GMO (or possibly the dad and through his sperm there is the issue) or that the child after they are born are eating the GMO?

What about how one twin can have autism while the other doesn't?

It has to be responsible for an increase, because the milder forms of autism simply were not recognized at all when I was growing up. Nobody was diagnosed with them.

I'm more worried about artificial sweeteners.

Sorry, I ment "the ONLY reason."
I need to double check before posting...

I've always avoided the stuff, but I wouldn't be surprised. I'll be looking into that...

Taking in all the research out there, I wouldn't be suprised :o monsanto is a cancer that is infecting the earth, I heard rumors that they hired blackwater it could be a fear tactic but nothing suprises me these days.

people need to actually research genetic modification before coming with blatantly false generalizations.

it is evolution in the same way that breeding is, the timescale is different and there are fewer limits, some of which has the potential to be dangerous but you can be sure its not any and all GMO foods that will.

Not likely ---- The strongest evidence is that Autism/Asperger's is mostly inherited - its in the genes -

I am quite sure that we are born with it(this part is personal opinion). That the only reason that it is diagnosed mostly after the age of 2 and under the age of 20 is that you must reach the age where communication starts for someone to notice that your communication modes are "different" or "unusual" and many of us that make it to adult hood undiagnosed have learned well enough to get by that being diagnosed drops because we have no need to seek help.

Asperger's goes back in my family for Generations - my best guess is that it has been in the human race for more than 60,000 years, this is from the fact that it is found in all races and the races split apart somewhere between 60,000 and 70,000 years ago when we started leaving Africa.

As for the concept that Autism/Asperger's is on the rise in our population comes from sloppy interpretation of worthless data. You cannot change all the rules of who is and is not Autistic/Asperger's multiple times in a few years and then hope to draw any valid conclusions from "tests" that were done by radically different methods that change not only over time but by who is doing it! However, even before you get to the issue of interpretation you must face the fact that in all reality we have no Idea just what part of the population is on the spectrum. As far as I have been able to discover there never has been any real effort to estimate the percentage of the general population shows Autistic/Asperger's traits by methods that could pass any real peer reviewed scrutiny.

I've done loads of Research. You really need to do yours.
If you're comparing GMO production to evolution/breeding you really need to open your eyes.

GMO is a man made creation that is actually back-firing on the company at the moment. The Gmos are causing insects to evolve to resist the strain. So the corn that was supposed to cause the bugs stomachs to explode, or make the plants resist roundup are becoming stronger making GMO pointless and stupid.

Seriously, do your homework before you come onto my thread and try and tell me to do my research. I'm a mother who does lots of research to keep her family happy and healthy.

lol... she's being paranoid and only researching what she wants to know. that will lead to good conclusions. you're a mom? if i were christian i'd be praying for your kids.

clearly you dont seem to grasp what most GMO crops do, they copy paste small pieces of known genetic material from one species to another, usually without altering the expressed action.

i also know how much absolute bs one finds on the internet about genetic modification, one being resistance, you do know that bugs and animals are what they are specifically because they have already adapted to all the plant defences they contend with for survival, in an excosystem as stressed as ours this in itself can lead to tremendous problems, as it did when papaya was almost wiped off of hawaii by natural causes, this led to the introduction of genetecially modified papaya that in turn were more vulnerable to fruit flies, but otherwise they have never been shown to be anything but perfectly ordianry papaya, most papayas in the world are GMO.

you can also thank GMO's for saving more than a billion people who would have starved and effectively removing india from the equation when thinking about basic sustenance, again the largest effect has been cross contamination and not resistance or anything else.

what makes you imagine that GMO's would make a bugs stomach explode? where is there a scientific study?

there have been some concerns regarding a specific strain of wheat, i will give you that, but that is for genetically predisposed people(coelics disease)(an effect not mirrored in india by any known research or statistic despite being the largest userbase, suggesting additional variables), not the general population, we have medications that dont work well with specific genetic makeups and we have thousands of plants not fit for human consumption at all and even then the data is nothing but correlative, not causative, there are hundreds of variables not taken into account.

the most important and basic point here is that because of the very nature of GMO it is impossible by any objective aproach to deem it universally good or bad since it is different species, there is a far greater variance in nature than anything produced so far in a lab.

Why be rude?
I thought this was a place to share IDEAs without being belittled?

I'm only just learning about this stuff, I read what I see on my friends pages and the labelit.com website.

I'm all about being enlightened and get information from other people... but to sit there and talk about praying for my child?! You need to find somewhere else to be.

I pray for you.

PS: Thanks for the info Oodain, feel free to send me links to where you have read or is a good place to read up on it.

well autism politics is the debate part of the forum. thats why its called that. if you didn't mean to debate you should have posted it somewhere where it wouldn't be classified as politics. and btw this is a statement you made "I've done loads of Research. You really need to do yours. " that is a belittling thing to say. people tend to respond with other belittling statements when you start off like that. i understand that we all make mistakes, so if you didn't really mean to belittle anyone we can all forget my comment about praying and yours about your opinion being more valid than mine.
