Yet another thread about the CT Shooting...
Hey! I just joined. I'm sure this is probably something that most of you are sick of hearing about by now, but I wanted to know what you think about the shooting in Newtown and the way the media has covered it in connection with Asperger's?
The reason I ask is because I have been extremely saddened by the way the news outlets and media has reported things over the years, such as cases of bi-polar, etc. and have never given any good substantial beneficial information to the public, but rather a lot of gossip. After the shooting, I thought this might be a good time to clear some of that misinformation up and educate people on the various different types of disorders and neurological differences while we are on the subject, because it's an important thing to know to understand others but most people are largely ignorant about it.
On Thanksgiving I posted an article on my blog about my severe ADHD and the difficulties I had in school and at my job. I got a lot of good replies to that. Then also, my brother has bi-polar and a friend of mine has Asperger's, and I know a lot of people with different conditions, so, upon seeing the story on the news, I had the idea that I might like to write a follow-up article and explain Asperger's, bi-polar, and other disorders, too. This would be a lot more difficult than writing about ADHD, though, since I can write about my ADHD from personal experience, but that is not the case with Asperger's and bi-polar. I think I would need to work in conjunction with several people who actually have the condition to stay as accurate as possible.
I see that a lot of the threads on here have expressed concern over it, and many suggest that people should just ignore the issue and wait until it blows over. But I want to know about your thoughts on writing a blog entry to briefly cover some of the basic things people should know about Asperger's, bi-polar, other disorders, and what they're hearing on the news. I know there's probably already quite a few articles on that, but it is something to consider...
