In the past month, the term 'Asperger's Syndrome' has come up at least twice in relation to a violent, tragic event - first in Casper and again at Sandy Hook. As such, it makes sense for Wyoming citizens to be concerned, especially since one of these mass murders hit close to home. However, the misinformed portrayal of Aspergers and autistic individuals as being time bombs ticking toward the next mass murder - one that has been circulated far too often in the media - is just that. Misinformed.

While it is possible that these individuals had Asperger's Syndrome, it is more than likely due to misdiagnosis or co-morbid disorders (socipathy, depression, etc.) Autistic individuals are no more likely to go postal than any other person subjected to the same circumstances; it just seems that way because we are often ostracized and shunned more than average for being different, and have trouble understanding why. And by 'we' I include myself, a twenty-something college student who was diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome at the age of 5.

It's not autism itself that triggered the violence, but the lack of acceptance by the rest of society. If we can accept autistic individuals - like myself - and get the help that is needed for them to be independent and successful - like I hope to be - future tragedies like this may be averted.


I am blessed with friends, friends who understand me and accept me for who I am - a rarity for Asperger's individuals. They have stood by me and supported me through this. Now, I ask of everyone in Wyoming to do the same, by staying informed and refraining from prejudice. Take the time to learn more about autism, about who we are, and know that all of us just want to live successful, happy lives.
