I feel like there is so much frustration about being misunderstood. My solution has been to simply tell everyone that I have an autism spectrum disorder and then refuse to conform to social norms that make no sense. The people who stick around, I consider my community and they learn to be more like me instead of expecting me to adapt to them. Plus, then I get to advocate and educate. It's much easier to advocate for the whole community than for my individual self. I know not everyone is as verbal as I am but I'm seriously sick of being misunderstood. And often people continue to misunderstand me because they have their own ideas about why I am the way I am. But at least I feel like I'm doing something about it instead of tolerating the stress of trying so hard to act neurotyoical. At least I'm comfortable being alive now though. Join in with me! Come out! It's either that or this trend of seeing autism as a disease will continue. We have to stand up for ourselves or autism speaks and Donald trump will do it for us. Nobody wants that ignorant garbage.

Yes - I'm recently diagnosed in late middle age, and my life was heading in this direction before the dx. If anyone rejects me because of my aspieness, they are highly welcome to keep their distance.

This has resulted in far better friends than pretending to be NT,- there's less of them, but the quality of friendships much improved.

Being a chain smoker is handy as well, that gets rid of virtually everyone.
