I have never heard of this happening in New Zealand before. It is so shocking on so many levels that I hope there will be a powerful response from the NZ public, who like me will have been completely unaware of what these psychiatrists are doing to both the patient and his parents.

Here are some ways of contacting New Zealand's Minister of Health (Jonathan Coleman) who is responsible for that portfolio and has the most political power (though not always the will) to raise matters of mistreatment with the Ministry of Health:

Even a snailmail postcard (remember those!) could be sent to:
Jonathan Coleman MP
Parliament Buildings
Wellington
New Zealand

He does seem to have a general tendency to inaction until the heat goes on. Not that he's the only politician here that this could be said of..

Well that was absolutely HORRIFIC! to read! I wonder if as an American it would mean anything if I said something. I can still e-mail, because that's inhumane, evil really. 8O
Even if he is violent-ish, has melt-downs and the like you can work with a person, either way that's NOT how you treat a person, they don't even do that to criminals. How cruel.
