Archie Comics has issued the 3d story featuring an autistic teenager among the Riverdale gang, Scarlet Saltee!:)Has this been written about before? :?
The stories are only available as Pdfs, which you pay for, direct from the Archie executive who approved them ~ Nancy Silberkleit - nancy.archiecomics@gmail.com. I have the previous two but not this one! Say I sent you, and I ordered from her before, if you contact her - Dan Collins wrote the story, Fernando Ruiz penciled it ~ he is at Fernandoruizeverybody.com:http://fernandoruizeverybody/scarlet-is-back-in-flower-feet/ - Al MIlgrom inked it.
i am ASS-P at the Archiefans board! :D

Ooo ... now Archie Comics can claim to have their own version of "The Autistic Character"! That should increase sales, alright.

 Tokenism sucks!

Dilton Doiley, to me, is a sort of vaguely "Aspergian" sort of character.

He was one of my favorites in the Archie universe.

I remember Dilton too.

Don't know the new character OP is referring to but will check her out later...

The following is an excerpt from an interview with Nancy Silberkleit in The Wexford People:

"I was in the Philippines and I was giving a talk about Archie Comics", she said. "The people there said how they would love to have a character from the Philippines and there and then I said I'd make it happen. There were big cheers and then at the very end of the talk a man came up and said he was living in Wexford, Ireland, but he and his wife were originally from the Philippines."

"He explained to me that there were a lot of cultural similarities between Ireland and the Philippines and this changed the character even more."

The man, Arnie Roque who lives in Wexford, clearly made a big impact on Nancy and when researching for a name for her latest character, she starting googling Wexford before happening upon the Saltee Islands.

"Scarlet Saltee"

The result was Scarlet Saltee -- a brand new character, whose mother is from the Philippines and father is from Ireland. With Archie Comics also seeking to represent everyone, the new character also seeks to provide a positive depiction of autism.

"We saw a need to create a character that represents the autistic mind", said Nancy. "So scarlet is dealing with all the regular issues of being a teen; she's skilled in building objects and ideas. She desires friends, but sometimes her social cues don't always allow this. Graphic literacy helps sparks conversation on issues that are tough to talk about. Scarlet represents autism, kindness and inclusion. After meeting Arnie Roque I added diversity cultural differences and how to embrace our differences and get along."

Isn't that what they already do with the gay character who has no defining personality traits other than being gay?

Pretty much.

Although, after reading up on the character of Scarlet Saltee, how it was developed, and the backstory they created, I have to walk back my original assessment. This may not turn out to be just another generic form of "The Autistic Character", but a genuine effort to produce a three-dimensional character that can hold a story and drive a plot. As long as they don't turn the character into a caricature, we may see some stories that are inspirational instead of embarrassing

...The part about her ancestry (and surname) is new to me, that was not in the two previous stories.

I think it's great that the artist has come up with this idea for a character. I also liked Dilton a lot.

I was lucky enough to hear Nancy Silberkleit present about Scarlet at a conference today. I really loved what she said about using comics as a way to change the world. Someone mentioned today (I can't remember who because my brain was so overloaded) that positive representation in the media helps promote better mental health and I really cannot agree more.
