I know this isn't directly related to autism but its indirectly of interest.

The new Warner Brothers movie starring Anne Hathaway called "Witches" depicts Anne Hathaway's evil character having Ectrodactyly, a limb abnormality that's commonly referred to as "split hand"

The depiction has been criticised by disability advocates for making limb malformation as scary to young children and perpetuating stereotypes about people with disability as scary. The Hollywood remake also strongly exaggerates the original Roald Dahl book character which doesn't show obvious physical malformation

Well, there can be a biological reason that ab-normality is "scary." You would not want to mate with someone that might not give offspring that is not fit for an environment. "Normality" would be the statistical measure that at least can be recognized visually. So, I guess, it is not just a Hollywood thing.

Fortunately, there is genetic variation in the population that does allow for choice of mates that are not in the normal range for a group.

It looks like a stupid movie anyway. I thought the original movie looked stupid.

But since The Witches was written by Roald Dahl, I might read it sometime if I can, since I'll take the original books over any of the movie versions any day.

I don't know man, in Hollywood pirate movies the "bad" pirates are usually missing limbs or eyes while the "good" ones have all their body parts intact. I know back in those days a lot of sea travelers probably lost them to infections and stuff since they're stuck on a ship miles away from medical treatment, but that doesn't explain why any of the heroes that spend all their time sailing aren't even wearing an eye patch.

This was also the case in the movie 300 where the deformed Spartan dwarf was caricatured as hideous looking and was also made to be devious and back-biting in betraying the Spartans to the Persians

Witch or warlock movies like the Wizard of Oz where the good witch was a hot blonde and the bad witch was a ugly matty haired and crazy.
