Wasn't sure what people thought how a young autistic teen is being portrayed in a new Jennifer Lawrence film?

You diagnosed him just from that trailer? I would have to see the entire movie for a good diagnosis .

I saw a review which stated the teen was on the spectrum

The film will be released in June and at that time we should have a better idea if the character is labeled autistic during the movie, or if the people involved with the movie label him as autistic.

For argument's sake let's say the character is coded autistic. From the very limited information available it seems like a terrible representation. They are using the character's traits for laughs

I think the writers intended the teen to be autistic/aspie. He's also very bright and a nerd. I can see he's not being claimed.

In contrast Sheldon in BBT was not intended to be an Aspie but has been unofficially claimed as a poster boy for aspies.

Looks like an awful movie.
Makes fun of autism with the "help an autistic boy have a relationship" trope.
Ugh.

I also think its unfair to cast the character as autistic for the sake of being a laughing stock for NT viewers.

Yes, exactly.
I might have to watch the movie just to tell everybody not to watch the movie (?)

Not to mention Jennifer Lawrence should know better. She played a bipolar character in Silver Linings Playbook so she should know about sensitivity over stigma in casting neurodivergence on the big screen.

Yes, I expected better of her, too.
Although it's hard to tell how insensitive the movie is from just a trailer. It might not be as bad as it looks.

You don't have to watch it so you can tell me not to. The trailer is more than sufficient.

YUCK!
