Announcing GLIMPSE:
http://www.icdl.com:80/bookstore/glimpse/index.shtml
First edition of GLIMPSE:
http://www.icdl.com/bookstore/glimpse/do...E-1308.pdf

GLIMPSE is a new publication from ICDL that showcases the unique perspective contained in the writings and artwork of individuals with a history of autism and other developmental disabilities. We are seeking poetry, essays, reflections, short stories, photography, and two-dimensional artwork on any subject, so that we may gain a GLIMPSE into the rich inner life of these individuals. We are seeking work from individuals of all ages.

The 2007 issue of GLIMPSE is available online. Future issues will be published on the ICDL website and hard copies will be available for purchase. Current plans call for annual issues.

Submissions may be accepted, rejected, or accepted with editorial changes. Pieces may be held for possible inclusion in later editions. Pieces may not have been published elsewhere, unless you have secured written permission for reprinting. Final decision about inclusion in the magazine will fall to the co-editors.

Editors: Lori Jeanne Peloquin, PhD. and Austin Retzlaff

Lori Jeanne is a clinical psychologist on the ICDL faculty and the mother of Austin, who has a history of autism spectrum disorder, but now carries no diagnosis and receives no special services.
Austin is 16 and is on the staff of the literary magazine at his high school. His goal is to be a writer, and he is currently working on a fantasy novel.

I have to feel cynical about the roundabout way the above says that Lori cured her son.

So, are you recommending the ICDL's new wonder cure therapies?

I was looking at becoming a member of ICDL: a snip at $35 per annum, if I were a parent or a student. Only $50 for the basic professional membership. But... hm... I fit none of their categories so I can't join.

Then I noticed that if I could have joined, I could:

No... I don't misread that at all. Their PRIME goal is "the prevention... of children...". I am NOT twisting that.

well, I carry no diagnosis nor do I receive special services. . does that mean I am not an Aspie?
or are the only Aspies they have ever seen were ONLY those diagnosed and receiving special services?

wait, surely that doesn't mean the prevention of children with Autism. . .
it is referring to the prevention of AUTISM, isn't it?

No. There are four words in there with commas and an "and".
ICDL wrote:

The sense has to be (in reversed order):
  • the education of children with developmental, communication and learning disorders
  • the treatment children with developmental, communication and learning disorders
  • the identification of children with developmental, communication and learning disorders
  • the prevention of children with developmental, communication and learning disorders

I reversed the above, because as you read the sentence, the last thing you are reading is "the education of children...", which is fine.
The penultimate was "the treatment of children...", which I wasn't too happy about. "Treatment" rather than "support".
The third one back was already fading in my mind, but it registered... "the identification of children...". Will they be forced to wear badges?
Then the crunch, when I finally connected the first word to what it was being applied to. Moved way back there, so as to allow it to sound innocuous, and become disconnected, but it really is "the prevention of children...".

Wouldn't this be a good place for those of us with a voice to have that voice heard?

I must be missing something.

What would I say? What I do say. that I have Asperger's Syndrome, that I am autistic, that I may need support, I may need services but above all, I need to be listened to and understood not cured or eradicated and that there are 17,000 people talking about this issue on Wrongplanet.net

What else is there to be said? I'm not the only aspie in here who needs a voice. Heck if Amanda can speak using computers and cameras... who else has something to say?
