Frankly I think that is a silly reason. Nearly everything is stereotyped. Being a man is stereotyped, people with blonde hair are stereotyped, smart people, geeks, blind people, people with cerebal palsy are stereotyped.
Stereotypes exist to help people better understand a thing instantly and generally.
I know that when describing Aspergers a lot of people say 'It's a mild form of Autism', so why
not just have it be a mild level of Autistic disorder?
It's on the Autistic spectrum. If you have Aspergers you are Autistic. You may not be 'as Autistic' as a person with nonverbal 'classic' Autism, but that's why you have mild level Autism.
I think the changes are excellent, and that they will make people better understand that Aspergers
is a handicap. Yes there are positives that come a long with it, for some people, but the same can be said of Bipolar - my mother is, and she greatly enjoys her emotional upswings. That doesn't make bipolar any less of a debilitating mental illness (at least in my mother's case, as she has severe bipolar with psychotic features).
Also, as an aside, I cannot pronounce Aspergers. I can pronounce Autistic. This has influenced my point of view on the matter somewhat.
