Has anybody seen this yet?

It's basically on Fragile X and hoping to spread awareness, but of course that makes it somewhat connected to autism.

Cool, it's a shame that the autism (not autistic) community is generally not as positive such as say, Fragile X, Down syndrome and Angelman's syndrome community (of parents). I suppose it may improve once firm ground is established on the causes and that gives parents a focal point.

I agree, I think that's a part of the problem and a big factor of how come there're different attitudes on autism and on other disabilities with known causes.

I mean, autism is like, you actually have no idea how come that happens or happened to your child and you try hard to somehow find the mysterious responsible cause. I once read posts from a parent who's kid is autistic, I think seemingly regressed and all that which parents complain about and the parent tried many treatments besides behavioural therapy but also kept going to genetic testing as soon as it was available. And in the end, they figured out that their kid's autism was of one of those very few that causes are known/partly discovered.

And they said something like, well, I now know I can accept that's just the way it is currently and can stop trying to desperately hope of a sudden big recovery, because I know there's a chromosomal abnormality and I know a little more about what to expect and how to manage the autism for now.

I found that pretty awesome.

That is touching, I hope we don't have to wait too long for the genetics of autism to be unraveled. Funnily enough you should mention chromosomes, my cousin who has autism and a language disorder got tested and one of her chromosomes is abnormal (the end broke off, twisted around or something along those lines).

I was discussing some of the autism communities' attitudes towards autistics with my psychotherapist and we figured that it can be very frustrating not to have certainty, even an uncertain certainty (ie we either know or we never will know the cause) and the fact that no autistics fit into a convenient little 'box' as so to speak. Also, I know it confuses and frustrates my family a lot to the fact that the autistic (and chronically depressed) members look no different to anybody else-simplicity; life's complicated enough without us autistics making it even more so!

Some, many humans just need to have some foundations of knowledge or truth to stand on. But I figure that truth and knowledge can only be pragmatic (or analytic) at the best, not counting mathematical a-prioris of course (not sure if there is such thing, to hear Hume talk).
