Quote:
“There’s obvious myths about what a child with autism can do,” says Elaine Hall. “I plan to shatter those myths.” Her route to such shattering is a musical she calls “The Miracle Project.” Conceived, written, and performed by a group of autistic children, the project takes some six months from start to one-time-only presentation. Introducing the concept to parents and children, Hall concedes, “I know they’re skeptical. But she is determined and resilient, her faith born in part of her nine and half years experience with her autistic son Neal. “I can promise you,” she tells her group, “the first couple of weeks are gonna be chaotic.”

I'm not sure how I feel about this piece. Maybe that unsureness means that autism was appropriately presented as the complex situation that it is. I am glad they included kids whose traits covered a big range in intensity and type.

My only really clear reaction was that I wanted some of the Moms to let the kids say something a couple of times "to the floor" (not looking into eyes) before saying it while looking at their face. Maybe that's just me.

Any other reactions out there?

i skipped this after reading the blurb in the NY Times:

Quote:
The documentary features 10-year-old Wyatt, a source of insights about bullies and love; 10-year-old Henry, the son of musician Stephen Stills and a fountain of knowledge about dinosaurs; 9-year-old Adam, a curly-haired cellist; 14-year-old Lexi, a singer capable of performing Joni Mitchell songs with transcendent ease; and 12-year-old Neal, the son of Hall and an unpredictable blond charmer.

Alas,

Quote:
"I said: 'Honestly, people would rather show up for a root canal than sit through a movie about autism. It's painful, difficult and frightening. Why don't you turn that on its head by making a movie about kids who are struggling to achieve something and autism is the obstacle that gets in the way of their success?'

so a bunch of kids with unique skills and abilities i would ascribe to their
autism, but it's the autism that gets in the way of their success?

maybe that didn't come out in the show itself.
