When it comes to electoral decisions, people like to think image isn't everything. But according to researchers in Switzerland, potential voters may be heavily biased by physical appearance from a young age.
Previous research had found that when adults were briefly shown pictures of two unfamiliar candidates and asked to pick which one they preferred, they chose the winning candidate more than 70 percent of the time. A new study, by economists John Antonakis and Olaf Dalgas from the University of Lausanne, extends that finding to children younger than 13, who selected the winning candidate based only on photographs at virtually the same rate.
The similarity suggests that from an early age people may make voting decisions based largely on appearance rather than on the issues, which disturbs Antonakis.
