"Progress is slow in the war against autism"

http://www.cnn.com/feedback/forms/form1.html?35

You can let them know how you feel about having war declared against you or your child.

Cnn gets alot of their data from autism speaks and the cdc. Both have a very negtive view of autism. Call it a diseae and use over emoteive words. When as far as it is know it is a brain wiring thing or whatever it is. It sounds as werid as saying humans sould only be male and that a female brain is broken. Some levels of autism do make a person less able to take care of them self but even they need helpers that do not act like they are freaks. And that story the source is a anti-tax nutter who sould keep there view on tax out of the deabate on autism.
"If you get them employed, you won't have to pay for them forever," Searing said, adding it's much better to "turn these people into taxpayers instead of tax takers." Crazy person talk there

It's a shame they haven't reported all sides of the issue. CNN has an iReport section I've posted on here that has personal stories from other readers, and some include stories from autistic adults themselves.

That article is pretty standard fare. By now, the Autism Speaks types have largely won the war on defining autism, with stuff like "war on autism" flowing freely from the MSM. There's very little that autistic individuals can do to change minds-Autism Speaks was there first, and had funding that we don't, so they won. The thing we need to look out for now is a slippery slope towards eugenics, either killing people with autism or forced abortion of autistic fetuses. The US has a LONG history of eugenics, only in Germany was it more popular, and nowhere did it last as long as here. We need to make sure that we're not demonized as monsters or as hostages to the evil autism boogeyman who need to be broken out of autism prison.

As for work, there is plenty of discrimination out there against autistics working, partly due to the idea that they're all screaming violent demons. I think a lot of employers are worried that if they hire an autie, the autie will suddenly turn into a beast one day and smash things and beat people in a rampage. We need to combat that. We can't have a situation where it becomes legal to send autistics to death camps like in Nazi Germany or to warehouses like was done in the US, on the idea that we are irredeemably evil or destined for criminal lifestyles.

In part the demonetization indirect are to fund autism research and promote the need for intervention. The idea that an autism individual is a positive thing in anyway, or in most ways, is so odd of an idea to the directive of fundabilities the extreme end of the spectrum of political advocacy for autism will not like it. Here in Humboldt there is more a balance in local organizations least in how I perceive it. People with autism need to form their own organizations (with the help of professionals when needed) and use their skills and gifts to enable each other. The adverse general stereotypes that create such discrimination will then go away and be frowned upon if more are aware of the spectrum of truth of autism rather then funding based awareness's. However I do think a diversity of perceptions exists with regard to the what is autism and the manifested person. Behaviorally if you have it and are not violent then perhaps it is seen as your less autistic by some circles. There is however no way of separating the idea of autism from a person who has it and is made significantly different becuase of it and how he or she can be productive as defined by the society around us.

All a person with autism can do to be more integrated is justly fight a battle for autism rights in the most constructive and enabling ways. These stereotypes do not macro manifests necessary but when manifestations of horrid examples do exists it does not seem very good to everyone. The global perception of autism and the individual is as diverse as minds exists but the static manifestations of criminality and violent behavior when applied indifferently to the spectrum as a whole intentional or not need be assimilated and defeated which is easy to do. Discrimination exists in the media, product of ignorance and or a fools connotation to believe all experts without objectivity.

The war on autism to me is not a war against me but a war for positive results in the lives of people with autism. With regard to destroying me before I existed as a form of the war on autism, that will easily be overcome as a separate item when people with autism are allowed to speak on the macro projections in the media and become more so mainstream integrated as self-advocates when more people enable this by knowing about autism in the first place. In my community I could easily run radio awareness ads without a non-profit helping and filtering it about autism awareness myself and confront stereotypes in the thousands reached a month. However I do not believe the approach is defined good enough yet nor do I understand all these macro organizations.

People with autism need to work together to not only discuss advocacy but find a way to balance self-advocated projections that a majority can agree on. That means voting. The social networking skills are not always my best feature but I can see how it could work. I'm simply not capable of such an orchestration in entirety myself. The solutions take the time and efforts of others whom are willing to not be confrontational quickly and whom are willing I think to democratically vote and work together would acquire the best results. Funding is not an issue, money vs. the will of the free minds, money simply goes quickly while the minds carry on about it.

No peace treaty will be signed.

What a bizarre theory surrounding the MMR vaccine.

I had to look up MET. At the Pubmed gene database the MET entry had nothing directly related to the GI tract. Certainly alterered serotonin metabolism, which has been directly assessed in the autism spectrum, could explain both GI and neurologic effects.

Maybe someone can clarify MET.

Don't they realize that autism isn't a disease and it's not something you "suffer" from?
Hey Jim Carrey: Medical schools are not funded by Big Drug. Get your facts straight.

Reminds me of the book "Illness as Metaphor" by Susan Sontag. Granted Sontag was talking about cancer, tuberculosis, and AIDS (you know... stuff that can actually KILL you), but she took offense to peoples' bodies and minds being treated as battlefields. So do I. War? This makes it sound more important than it is, more urgent than it is.

If they actually take the time to hear the autisitc people's side of the story, they would see that the vast majority don't want a "war" fought against them

I want more positive autism awareness, but I want to speak to the people who don't know. I want to do public speaking and get in the media to talk about it, but I'm not quite sure how to go about starting along that path. The media I am most interested in because it's easier than public speaking for me, anyway.

Do you have any suggestions short of hiring a publicist? I don't have that kind of funds anyway.

Eileen.

I wonder what benefit would those that endorse such a war would recieve. That would show what kind of person they are. Probably just hiding behind a mask.
