I have an idea; this month is Autism Awareness Month, right? It's a big chance for all the organizations and whatnot to pull out the propaganda. The question is, how much of this gives us aspies and autistic people a chance to say something?

Since I've been looking for a new idea for a new video, I have an idea to post an autism awareness vid with information about autism that we would like the public to know.

So what would you like to tell people? (specifically about autism)

What I'm going to do, if you'd like to answer, is make a video with your answers, and tell me whether you'd like me to reference your name or not.

I think it's a good idea.

1. Autism doesn't just affect children - and children with autism grow up to be adults with autism.
2. Some people go their entire lives without being diagnosed, or are not diagnosed until well into adulthood. This has always been the case.
3. People with autism can be resourceful & find a way to make a life for themselves.
4. The lives that people with autism make for themselves are often unconventional - and just because they don't match Society's "norm," that doesn't mean there's anything wrong with them.

Personally, I think any ideas you include in your video should be ideas that you believe in enough to call them your own - it would make for a stronger message (but you can reference me if you want.)

As far as autism awareness goes in Asperger syndrome as well there is often been mentioned the triad of impairments in communication, in social skills and in imagination.whatever that means. I do not see Asperger syndrome as a disability but it can be helpful in getting certain benefits which could be a compensation for years of Aspiphobia. However autism/Asperger syndrome is an invisible neuroconfiguration and a lot can be done to find a niche.

What certain websites such as YT can do is delete the propaganda that certain Neo Nazi organisations such as autism speaks and defeat autism now are puttting up and misinforming people

I think you should use your own ideas and words, but poll us here to see how we feel about an issue before making a statement about it. For example, some of us don't think AS is a disability, some do, so you need to be careful how you talk about that one.

That's what I did for the article I wrote (see thread from earlier this week in this folder) - I polled at WP first to see how others felt on the issue just to be sure it wasn't just me. And then I hedged my bets with my phrasing.

You all make a good point about believe in my own ideas and using my own words. I just don't want to go and say something that's just me, but has the support of other autistic people.

I did something similar a few years ago with a comic book, where I asked for ideas and opinions of the LiveJournal Asperger community. They gave me ideas and their thoughts, and I made a comic, and then in the end, thanked all of them for their support and inspiration.
Would that be acceptable for the video?

I think you have a pretty good plan.

Anemone raised an excellent point - the spectrum is quite broad & it's impossible to speak for all, but you can say what you believe/feel & use careful phrasing to state what "many" or "some" believe/feel.

Best of luck - I'm really looking forward to seeing what you come up with!

I'd love to read that comic! And the video, once you've made it. Will you link to it?

I did the comic as a way for a local support organization to raise money. Half of the proceeds goes to the organization, and half goes to me. They had it in a bad quality pdf format on the site, and then people could order the real thing. However, I think they took it down.... Yeah, I just checked the site; they took it down.
