Im thinking of trying the one called Alli
http://www.alli.co.uk/WhatIsAlli/default.aspx

but I know there are also ones in the health food shop which are made of cactus such as lipobind

the best 'fat blocking' I have used is Alli by GlaxoSmithKline http://myalli.com/

Quote:
Alli promotes weight loss by decreasing absorption of fat by the intestines, which reduces the number of calories you absorb.

Lipase, an enzyme found in the digestive tract, helps break down dietary fat into smaller components, so it can be used or stored for energy. Alli works by disabling lipase, which prevents the enzyme from breaking down the fat while it's in your digestive tract. The undigested fat continues through the intestines and is eliminated through bowel movements.

Alli is taken with fat-containing meals, up to three times a day. Because of how Alli works, it's recommended that you eat no more than 15 grams of fat with each meal. Eating higher amounts of fat can cause unwanted effects, such as urgent bowel movements, diarrhea and gas with oily spotting.

in other words, if you go off your diet and eat more than the recommended fat grams, you will wish you hadn't! I found taking Alli very valuable at training me how to walk past the holiday fat laden treats, pizza, fatty ribs, etc. because the threat of having 'serious gastric distress'.

I lost 75 lbs on Alli in 8 months and then stopped taking it. I have only gained back 15 lbs in a year and know if I did the Alli diet again those 15 lbs would just slide off in two months, no problem.

your mileage may vary, of course

Merle

Personally, I don't like diarrhea.

the pharmacist said people only get diarrhea if they eat too much fat. I veiw it as working the same way as antibuse tablets for alcoholics.

I will let you all know how I get on with them and if they work.

If I could get my fat levels down that low, I wouldn't need the pills

I enjoy a high fat diet. Maybe I'm a Polar Bear in disguise.

But don't let my cynical nature discourage you; besides, if merle says it's good, then I believe it.

I wish you complete success! Good luck! :D

I was never bothered by too much fat, I used my Aspie-ness to just refuse to eat fat when I was on the Alli, and I walked past the free pizza at work, the birthday cakes and cheesecakes, the chips and dip, etc. At first I was really frightened of the uncontrollable evacuation, but by limiting my fat grams (all described very simply in the booklets that come with the pills) the weight just melted off. I became enamored with my new self, and the graph you can create on the 'myalli' website is GREAT, I keep it on my refridgerator so I can see what I actually CAN do when I dedicate myself to it.

But I also waited until I WANTED TO DO IT more than I DIDN'T WANT TO DO IT. That is the real secret. I didn't fight myself, I waited until I was into it and didn't go against my own inclination.

I feel very positive too, its great to think I might actually do it this time! Ive had so many failed attempts at loosing weight and it really brings me down.

It was the first day today on the Alli tablets and its been great! Ive stuck strictly to my 15g fat per meal and had no problems at all. Im very excited about loosing weight!

I love that it has a forum (I love forums!), and Ive started my weight loss graph, I will also put mine on the fridge when I ve finished as it is a big acheivement.

Have you tried eating a lot of protein, with moderate strength training (dumbells or even 10-20 pushups every day)? Try eating egg white, meat, peanut butter, milk, protein shakes, etc... Stay away from "protein bars". They are just candy.

Remember, a balanced diet is crucial. I'm advocating adding more protein to your diet, NOT eating exclusively protein. You'd still need to eat carbs and fiber.

Stay away from refined sugar (candy, cake, cookies, ice cream, pastries). That stuff is the worst.

definately do strength training, it will give you more shape and make you very hungry.

and there are lots of tablets that make people fat, the best is olanzapine, which makes everyone very fat!

LotusBlossom, I found the little booklet that you record all your food for the day to be very helpful! I would suggest you make copies of the pages you haven't used yet so you can continue it when you run out of the pages that come with your Alli starter pack.

I got my Alli during the Breast Cancer awareness month (October, I think) so my carrying case is pepto bismol pink. What color is your carrier?

they cost £19 for a fortnight, £39 for a month, or you can get a higher dose on perscription from your doctor (for free). You have to have a BMI over 28 (it has a BMI calculator on the website) and they wont let you buy more if your weight goes under BMI 28. You can only take them for 6 months and you must stick to the low fat diet or you get diarrhea.
