I have a son who is 14 and was diagnosed with high functioning Autism last year when he was 13....how we have tried almost every thing possible to calm him down...he will have regular outbursts of tempers..ranging from breaking things to hitting me...he is in a specialist school and they are finding it difficult to manage his outbursts...he refuses to go to school...and will cause problems with the other kids while he is there...now the doctor he see's thinks that he may now have a Phycosis, what I need to know is my friend said that giving him cannabis will calm him down, is that right? Has anyone here been this desperate that they have tried it, and if so what was the outcome...?

He has been one at least 9 different forms of medications and they all made him sick....so this is my remaining option...good or bad???

Is medical marijuana legal where you live? There are fewer harmful side effects from cannabis than any other medication you could give him, so if it's your last option you might as well try it.

One caveat: if he IS psychotic, cannabis use is slightly correlated with a higher risk of a psychotic break. Using a strain of marijuana that is high in CBD and low in THC content might ward that off.

No it is not legal where I live....I know very little about marijuana..so can you explain what CBD is please? The problem I have is that when he was on the medications given to him by the doctors they either made him sick or like a robot, a shell of himself...he is such a vibrant enjoyable child when he is calm..but when he looses it..my god everyone runs for cover...we have tried very extensive counselling and various other avenues...

Keep trying. At the end of the day, cannabis is just another chemical; it binds to different neurotransmitter receptors in different parts of the brain; it is by no means a cure-all. Put it this way: if the docs put you on an antibiotic for something, and it didn't work, you'd ask for a different one, yes? Psych meds are no different. Keep trying. I find it hard to believe you have gone through every single psychotropic medication in the US. 9 is by no means an exhaustive list. Have you thought about an in-patient program?

I have a medical cannabis license, which I primarily use because of my HFA, and the previous posters are right, cannabidiol is something to look for, but is generally quite difficult to come by outside of medical programs. That said, it can be selected for in the cultivation of plants and isolated in concentrates. Feel free to PM me if you'd like to talk specifics.

As Asperger/HFA diagnosed I cannot agree with your doctor. Cannabis can be a good stuff, for some special occations, but from my oppinion is nothing you should use daily.

The thing is, it calms you and makes you more sufficient, when under influence of Cannabis. But the more you simply manipulate your feelings the way you want it, by using a chemical substance, the less you wont be able to do so, without that substance. How shall you learn to regulate your feelings without Cannabis, when you are never without Cannabis?

As well that the sufficient and happy feelings can have negative consequences as well, specially for an 14 year old. If you are anyway happy and sufficient, you loose motivation to acchieve certain stuff, to become like that. The motivation of cleaning up your room, doing a 9.000 parts puzzle, getting a good mark in a subject you like, acchieving something that you are proud of, is for being happy and sufficient. If you are anyway, because of an substance forcing you to do so, you have less motivation and cause to make yourself happy by accievements you do in your life.

I have no probs, using it from now and then, as example to handle special stress situations better, as dentist visits or big family occasions like weddings, festivals and so on.

But in my oppinion, it should not be in your daily life as every other chemical mood-changing substance.
