Welcome everyone, to my race report of the Tamiya Championship Series regional race in Aliso Viejo, CA. The race took place on February 28th 2010. This was the first TCS race I competed in as a past Tamiya North American Finals champion, which is a huge honor for me due to the fact that is what I wanted to be al my life. This would be a race where I would not have whole lot of pressure two win so I competed in a less stressful class called “M-Chassis” or Mini for short. This is the cheapest class that are based off compact European and Japanese turbocharged cars that are ether Front Wheel Drive or Rear Wheel Drive, three are no Four Wheel Drive cars. I am running a front wheel drive Fiat. There are two qualifiers that are 5 minutes long, in this race format you are racing against the clock and not other racers, how well you qualify is where you start in the “main finals” which are five minutes as well too. The day before the race it rained heavily so there was a lot of track maintenance going on to dry off the track by using big heavy leaf blowers.

Qualifier one.

In qualifying, racers use a staggered start, there are ten racers in each heat, the races starts off with the first racer going off on the tone (a low sounding buzzer) the a second later the next racers starts off then the 3rd car, etc. I am starting at the back off the pack but I have a fast car in my heat. The car in front of me is a little slow so when my number is called up I wait till he gets to the starting line, then I begin my qualifying session. I take the lead at the 3rd or 4th lap and I start to get a good feel of the car and begin to see how competitive I am. Right now I’m on a pace to put myself in the A main (top ten racers) I hoped, I have to be very patient while driving through traffic, some are not getting out of my way as easily but I managed to get by which is costing me a bit of time. In remote control car racing, if someone is faster than you are you have to move over and let him or her by or else you will hold him or her up. Time expires and I come first in my heat and at the end of the round I am sitting 5th in the A main.

Qualifier two.

I decided not to do any adjusting to the car because it thought the car was driving ok but I thought it could be better, however did not know enough knowledge on how to tune a Front Wheel Drive mini to improve the performance of the car, this is a new class for me and my dad so we sometimes have to take it as it is to maker an adjustment on the car. This time I am starting on the front row of my heat since I came first in the last qualifier.

As the tones sounds I speed off and begin my second qualifier, it was pretty much the same as the first, I had to deal with stubborn traffic but I was able to improve my time by a second however many more racers were able to turn up the heat and race faster times than I did. This time for the A main event I was sitting 7th on the grid, which is the lowest I’ve had in the Tamiya Championship Series in 10 years. However I am learning a new car so I really couldn’t be that hard on myself that much.

After the last qualifying round there was a short break to set up the mains. There is a problem going on with the scoring and timing system which is run by a computer and they are having trouble trying to get the times from the second round of qualifying in to the A mains. The officials extended the break and continued to work on the problem however the results could not be fixed and it was starting got to get dark so what they decided to do was to bite the bullet and put the times that they had on the first round of qualifying and use it for the mains. So now instead of being qualified 7th on the grid, I was qualified 5th which made me happy but there were a lot of racers who had a better time in the second round of qualifying ha made it into the A main but had the settle for the B main (top 20 racers)

Main finals

My race would the last race of the day and it was starting to get very dark outside, as the sun continued to set as the race day progressed on, the track became darker and darker and it was becoming harder to see by 6 o clock. The race officials had to bring out portable lights and full size cars that were driving up to the track and turned on their headlights so the racers could se a little better but it still didn’t help much, it also was getting colder which meant everyone's tires were starting to get harder and did not hook up to the track very well. When the track gets cold, your car does not handle as well and does not have a lot of grip. Your tires also turn as hard as rocks and make the car very slippery. There were a lot of racers who had to go home to their families and couldn’t stay around much longer, including some of the drivers in my race. The A main in Mini would not have as much racers as they were supposed to in the finals. After I checked in and went through tech, I got up onto the drivers stand to see what he track would look like in the dark. There were some parts of the track that I could see clearly but there were also some parts that I couldn’t see at all, as the race before me ended I walked up top my favorite spot on the stand and then waited for my dad to put my car onto the track and then I took a practice lap, from the very first few turns on the track I knew that my car was going to be a handful to drive and it was very loose and tail happy. After to took my practice lap I then drove up to my starting position said a little prayer and then got ready for the race the to begin.

The horn sounded and as I went into the first corner went sideways where I almost took one of the drivers out and then I had to pretty much drive the rest of the race with a pretty ill handling car, it was like driving on a ice pond with slick tires, I could see the track very well but as far as car’s handling goes it didn’t go too smooth. I managed to finish the race 5th, no better than what I started with, but no worse result. On a good note, there were some racing friends of mine that I helped coach and setup their cars that won that day and I felt pretty happy that they won and they were feeling very happy themselves.

Thank you for reading my race report of the Aliso Viejo Tamiya Championship Series regional race I welcome comments and I will be willing to ask any questions.

Round 1 of RCGT series at West Coast RC Raceway.

The RCGT series is a six round point series that is held around the LA/Orange County, CA area. This series uses 4WD touring car chassis with sports car body shells, no touring car body shells are allowed. They also use a special type of treaded tire that is sued in the race as well. The race officials are giving out points at the end of each round, 100 for first, 99 for second, 98 third, 97 forth and so on. One bonus point is awarded for attending a round, one bonus point is awarded for make the pole and one bonus point is awarded for the who have decorative accessories on the car such as mirrors or a windshield wiper, I have those accessories on my car and I will continue to have them on my car for the rest of the series. I had practiced on Thursday and Friday night before the race and me and my father got the car very well setup the following nights before the race so me and my dad were feeling pretty confident on doing well or maybe even winning the race.

Qualifying, round one.

In RCGT, all qualifiers and mains are a heads up, on the tone start that are 7 minutes long. In the first qualifier you are randomly picked for where you will be starting on the grid, Luckily I am starting first, behind me on the grid is Mike Molina, one of the racers that will be challenged me for the TQ throughout the qualifiers.

As the tone sound I get off to a very good start, I and Mike then begin to break away from the pack. For more than two minutes mike and I are bumper to bumper trying not to take each other out and not trying to get into an accident. By 3 minutes we are still neck and neck, two laps later Molina rolls his car over by turning in too sharply and I get some breathing room for me to increase my lead. Mike tries to reel me in for the rest of the race but I’m able to keep ahead him all the way to the last lap. At the end of round one I am sitting on the pole position (Top Qualifier)

Qualifying round two

This time the starting grid is reversed and the racer who was in the lead starts in the back and last place start in the front, in this round I will have to contend with a few less coordinated racers that will be tough to get by, that are starting in front of me. The tone sounds and everyone make a dash to the first corner, I’m able to get right in front of Mike Molina two laps later but I have to deal with slower racers who I am battling with that are hard to get by, and with two minutes into the race Mike Molina is right on my bumper that looks like he going to take me out so I let him by as I tuck him behind just for strategy while two laps later the leader rolls it over and me and Mike begin our duel. For 30 seconds I’m only two seconds behind Mike however I take a corner too tight and roll the car over for two seconds, luckily I do not have to be marshaled and I’m able to get back up and running again however I have lost a great deal of time, I managed to catch cup to him by a couple of tenths however I am not able to reel him and in I lose my TQ position by 2 tenths of a second since Mike Molina had a faster overall run in round 2 than I did in round one.

A main finals

I am sitting 2nd on the grid, I decide to take some steering speed out on how fast I want the wheels to urn on my Transmitter (Radio Control) so my car will not turn as sharp and I won’t cut the corners as tight that would prevent me from rolling the car over again. All the cars roll up to their starting grids and then we get ready for the race to begin, I say a little prayer before the tone sounds and take a deep breath and get ready for battle.

As the tone sounds everyone drives hard into the first turn and I notice that I am much faster than Mike Molina and I wait for him to make a mistake, half way on the first lap he hits a corner in front of me and I run right in the rear of him and I roll over and it takes me 4 seconds for me to get marshaled and I am now racing at the back of the pack and now I have to catch up to the rest of the field, I pick off each racer one by one by either passing them or waiting for them to make a mistake. With 2 minutes into the race I made a gutsy pass on 5th place on the inside while crossing the starting line, and then I focused on 4th place. 3rd and 4th are battling it out, I once tried to make a pass on 4th place coming into the carrousel but I got the door slammed on me and spun out a bit (“Slam the door” means that if someone tires to make a pass on you your able to block him quickly and not let him pass.) for the rest of the race I try to make a pass on 4th but time expirers and I end up finishing 5th overall. I get one point for having accessories such as mirrors and windshield wipers on my car and one point for being in attendance in the race I am in 5th place with 98 points. The next round of the RCGT series will be at the Huntington Beach Sports Complex in Huntington Beach, CA on April 4th. Thank you for reading and I will be more than happy to ask any questions about the sport.

Hello everyone, I just won round 2 of the RCGT showdown in Huntington Beach CA, There was very close racing between me and my competitors, just minutes after my A main finals there was a earthquake, nothing big just a few shaking here and there, I will be working on the race report soon.
